Reply:Are you going to build the mail box or the post?
Reply:I've always been interested in this as well. I live in a park though with a community mail center, so I haven't as of yet gotten to customize one! I can't wait to see all your ideas!Have a Jeep Cherokee? Click Here!

Reply:in one of the other threads, Zapster mentioned making one out of some old car/truck suspension springs. i guess it hold up to repeated abuse from snow plows in the winter. i have also seen one in my neighborhood that was made from a length of i-beam and a 1/4" plate. it was the only one that survived this past winter on my plow truck driver's route (on my street anyway).Later,Andy
Reply:Bob:I hadn't considered making the mailbox as well but that's an interesting thought. Hmmmm...I was mainly wondering about the support (post).Incidentally, here in East Texas we don't have snow plows.......I'm originally from Canada and I don't miss the snow one bit.......Thanks for the replies so far.Glenn.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
Reply:Ive had a mail box that has been a project for 2 years. Been busy with other stuff but finally had gotten around to finishing it. I just had the Idea yesterday to put a spring on the base that I had from my atv. What a coincidence. It has a pw50 piston on the side with a 3/4 tube about 6" long with a piece of diomand plate for the flag. It has a ss top on the box and a ss post. Im going to finish it this weekend. Reply:It seems that in this area we have, for years, had some people who like to beat mailboxes flat with a piece of pipe or a bat. I`ve built a lot of mailboxes that are virtually indestructable.[and, no, its not me doing it]It seems everyone that wants one wants it to look like a mailbox. I use a piece of 3/16" wall, six" pipe and split it in half lengthwise. For the sides, front, back and bottom I use 6"x3/16" flat strap. It makes it very easy to build that way. The door is recessed in about an inch to prevent rain from getting in. There is one not to far from the house, I`ll try to get some pictures tomorrow and post some tomorrow nite. Bob

Reply:I always liked drill pipe for the post on a mail box. Drop the box in the ground and cement it in and it's not going anywhere. They only hit it once with anything including their car or truck and decide to leave it alone, lol.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist. |
