tig with no gas

can you weld mild steel with out gas with a tig, just to get used to the puddle and not use up the gas??? thanks.

Reply:You can not do it because it oxidizes the tungsten.
Reply:Heres what you do..........unscrew the lines from the rig.....and sleep with it...get a piece of 2x4 pine and start walking the cup on it....you will see the marks left from cup on the wood.......this is what the bead will look like when you start to put filler metal in the pass. No gas needed for practice....

Reply:thanks, I didn't know that the tungsten needed the argon to survive, I thought it was for the oxidizing the weld.
Reply:I you like to buy tungstens, try it! At some point you probably will forget to turn on the gas and the tungsten will go puff! Take care.
Reply:Hi All,  I can't believe I'm talking welding when I'm not at work  Anyway Robin, any young fella's that I teach I try to get them going free-hand first, that way when there in a real tight spot they at least know how to do it. It's a lot easier to learn to walk the cup later.Well it's a theory anyway.Cheers
