I started a new job about 5 months ago and one of the guys in the shop that Ive become friends with is the fab guy. I told him about me learning to weld over the months and Il pick up his scraps and stick them togeather and bring them back in for him to look at and tell me what Im doing wrong or right. A few weeks ago we were sitting around the break table and he asked if I had done any more welding. I told him I was running low on rods and the next time he ordered rods to get me some. He said that he had a few at the house he has been wnating to get rid of. He said his kneees were to sore to work on the side and he just wanted rid of them. Well today he brought them in and I loaded them in my truck before our safty meeting. I thought he said he had a few! I tried to give him some money, like I had a lot on my any how, and he smiled and said i want you to lear, enjoy! Attached Images
Reply:Nice. It's cool ta see people help other people out. Especially in the learning process. Now do your co-worker proud and practice. When ya think ya got it down good, practice some more. Then pass on the knowledge to someone else learning. Chainz________O/AMiller 250XMiller SD 180Spoolmatic 30AThermal Dynamics Pak 50and a bunch of other crap......
Reply:Sweet!, now get to melting some metal!Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:You defiently have some money sitting there in those stainless rods.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:nice score.  that's pretty cool.  you are lucky to work/know people like that.   You owe that guy a night at the titty barDayePound to fit, paint to match
Reply:Looks like most of those a special use rods, just at a quick glance I see a few boxes for hardfacing, cast iron and maybe nickel alloy.  Just make sure to do your research on what is in each box, as their amperage's and polarity may vary greatly.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Nice score man!! I think you should weld him up something nice :-)[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:lanceYou havent seen me weld, LOL yes Id say I have found a friend in this guy, to give me all this. I know there is some stainless and the nickel rods, but none of the boxes are marked on what to run them on. Now there is about 75 lbs of 7018 and 75 lbs of 6012. Those I will use the most in my learning. I wish I had the time to take a class or two at the local tech school. But for now I have you guys and the guys at work. Attached Images
Reply:Never heard of 6012, but good luck with that :-)I bet that you can find amperage charts here online somewhere, just google the diameter and type of rod, or perhaps post it here, and I'm sure that someone will let you know.I'm a high school welding student, first year, and we're doing stick welding right now. I love it. At first, it was really intimidating, but you get the hang of it. The guys here are great, if you post a couple beads, or a project, they will throw back a lot of advice. 7018 is great stuff, it runs nicely (on AC or DC+) and puts out very good looking welds.I'm sure you'll do fine... Its a lot of fun :-)[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:6012 is just an all postion version of 6022.  Which is deck pan welding rod.  Its for making the 5/8" round puddle weld when tacking deck pan to the bar joists.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:XtreamI guess I can use them for sheet metal? In place of the 6013 ?
Reply:Most of the flux of those rod appears to still be good. Here's some info on keeping or storing your welding rods ( it comes from Keen Ovens site)How to store rods properly…In stick welding we use a rod (welding electrode) covered with flux. It was discovered in WWII that coatings on the filler rod made it weld better. On ships and other production sites, bare metal rods were used usually in the flat position. Rods were stored out in the open and not much care was taken with them. One day some guy in a hurry grabs a rod that's been left out and is covered with rust. Next thing he knows, it is welding better than a brand new clean one. After experimenting with various coatings of silica, cellulose, sodium and other elements it was found that putting a flux coating on the filler rod produced a very sound weld. Flux burns and turns into a shielding gas that protects the weld pool from atmospheric contaminants such as hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and others. These contaminants get into the weld pool and cause defects such as cracking, and porosity (worm holes.) These defects create a weak point where the weld can fail under stress or load. To keep that from happening, rods should always be stored properly. What happens, especially in low-hydrogen rods, is moisture gets into the flux. Low-hydrogen rods are just what their name states…low hydrogen. They need to be kept dry or porosity will be introduced into the weld bead. This will happen at the beginning of the bead with each new rod used, and diminish as the rod heats up and burns the moisture out as it is being consumed. Many job sites and shops do not store rods properly and moisture gets into the flux. This moisture turns into steam and leaves small bubbles in the weld pool which leaves holes. Rods need to be stored in hermetically sealed boxes in a vacuum. Once the box is open, humidity in the air will enter the rod flux, so something must be done to keep this from happening. Too many people use methods they have heard from other welders which do not work. It's almost like old wives' tales, the stories out there. Some say proper rod storage is wrapping the rods in plastic and putting them in the freezer. Others say get an old refrigerator and put a light bulb in it. The only correct method of storing rods properly is to put them in an approved rod oven. An approved rod oven will keep the rods at their manufacturer-rated storage temperature, and can be used to re-bake the rods after they have been exposed to atmospheric moisture. Although E-XX10, 11, 12, & 13 rods can be stored in dry boxes at room temperature, most other rods are recommended to be stored at anywhere from 150 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. That's why the refrigerator with a light bulb is not good for rod storage. It will not achieve 400 degrees, and the light bulb is not going to create uniform heat throughout the inside. The heat needs to be consistent and that is achieved with a professional oven whether portable, floor or bench.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:7AIm al into horse trading. I really cant see me using the stainless rods, and I wont open any cans till I need them. The hard face and nickel rods will be used. Im sure Ill find another block that will need welded and when I build me next loader Ill use the hard face rods on the bucket. Not to mention I may get some work for them with he lands scape co down the road. They have quite a few buckets, and our soil is real hard on them. SpectorThanks for posting that. I didnt know what "hermetically" meant. I burned some 7018s yesterday with the fab guy and what ever he had burned nicer than what Im using. Also Im using my ranger and I cant do a fine tune as he did yesterday on a 3 phase machine. Also his 30 years of welding has something to do with it too Im sure!
