About 3 or 4 year's ago we did a small piping job and the boss turned up with some  plus series rod's from Lincoln that take over from the old 5P and hippy rod's. I couldn't beleive what a step up they are, you can do so much more with them it's unbeleivable. Anything from butted up tight (alway's the 6010 strong point) to a root gap out around 5mm.   They make life a lot easier when the fitter says the dreaded word's "the welder will fix that"Anyone else used the plus series rod's and what are your thought's on them?Stephen
Reply:What Kind Of Rods Were Considered Hippy Rods
Reply:I Have Welded With The 5p Plus Rod I Like It Was The 6010 Considered The Hippy Rod I'm Confused Any Info .
Reply:I Meant 6011 Sorry
Reply:Also I Am New On Here What Is The Icq Number For The Profile Any Info Thanks....
Reply:The Hippy is a nick name used for a 7010 in New Zealand, by Lincoln it was a mutt of a rod  I believe it was only used down this way)
Reply:5p Hyppie has a red coating or flux 5p or 5p+ has a grey coating on it. Hyppie works realy well for the hot pass and cap. 5P is a dream for the root. If you want the best use the new 6P+ from licoln it is a few dollars more a box but is worth every penny.

Reply:I have done a lot of pipelining and I had the least problems of pinhole on the cap with HYP rod with a red flux. All of the hypie rod I have ever used ahd a red flux and was 6010 rod. Look at what filler metals there are before you tell someone they are completly wrong.

Reply:I can't attest to how much experience anyone has had, nor do I know a damned thing about stick welding or pipelining, but in this modern age of the Internet, it's pretty easy to verify most things.A quick search on Google for "hippie rod welding" shows that people are referring to Lincoln's Shield-Arc-HYP+ rod, which they have listed as AWS E7010-G and E7010-P1.  That data is here:http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Cat...eet.asp?p=5682The 5P or 5P+ rod is actually their "Fleetweld 5P+" product which is listed as AWS E6010:http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Cat...eet.asp?p=5667They don't show a 6P+ on their list of stick electrodes:http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Catalog/consumableseries.asp?browse=104|2030|-Heath
Reply:"5p Hyppie has a red coating or flux 5p or 5p+ has a grey coating on it."Weld engineer,  I think you may have your rods confused.  Hippie rods as stated above are Lincoln's Shield-Arc HYP+ which is a 7010.  5P is a 6010.  As far as the flux goes.  The last can of 5P's I bought had a red flux on them not grey. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Never mind you guys are all the same someone says they are in school and you asume they are stupid and can't do anything so no point in trying to explane anything.
Reply:Weldengineer, I don't think that anyone was assuming you are stupid, but that you were either misinformed, or had your rods mixed up, Everyone makes mistakes.  I make several daily.  I have read some of your other post and have no doubt that you are very knowledgable about welding.  Don't give up, just hang in there and explain your point.  If you are wrong then you are wrong, no big deal.   Tf you are right, then you set everyone else straight, and put an end to the misguided information.  As far as age and experience go, I am not but a few years older than you, So age is not an issue. Tell us about what work you've done, stick to your guns, and prove your point.  If it turns out that someone else knows more, then accept it and move on.   Just my $.02 ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I use these electrodes on a daily basis as a professional pipe welder.5P is a fast freeze rod preferred by welders for root and hot pass.It is an all-position rod with red flux, good for 60,000 psi tensile strength-lots of splatter and sparks, requires manipulation -often used in gas distribution(pipeline) welding. The AWS #is E6010. HYP stands for High Yield Pipe- E7010-A different wire-similar flux, but tan in color, its tensile rating 10,000 lbs higher-can be used on code work and downhilled,it will burn you up(like 5P) Around 1993 or 94 Lincoln introduced a new improved electrode-5P+  Same physical strength ,60,000 with a ''softer'' arc ,less splatter, easier to work, less sparks -due to a new gray heavier flux coating.Just about everybody in the Pipefitting Industry uses it either as a stand alone rod or in conjunction w/7018-I haven't seen the old red 5P on a job in years-6010+ is specified in most refinery and petrochem weld procedures as root pass electrode. I don't know if they even manufacture it anymore,5P that is ,as 5P+ has replaced itLast edited by erich636; 09-01-2005 at 10:41 PM.
Reply:I have run both 5P and 5P+  I guess I suck cause I personally never notcied a difference.  Course I was in weld school and a boot when I ran 5P+ last so I guess it kinda shows.  As far as being red and gray, well I just recently ran some new red rods.  And yeah I know about them gray ones.  I dint know they were 5P+ till later on.  JT, you might be the man to ask.  Tha hyppie rod,  is it the mil-spec 7010?  I dont reckon your miltary so you might not know.  Anyway, for all y'all who fear ole red rod is gone it aint.  I personally just prefer the red.  Ive always found it cheaper and I like to get my rods as cheap as I can lol.   As far as having gone to school,  I went to school too weld eng.  I gotta tell you JT is not someone to bullshet.  And hes not the only one on this site.  Like Hammack said, if your right your right and stick to your guns, just dont fill nobody with bs cause believe it or not everyone sees right through it.  The boys in here who really know their stuff know when theyre bein had and they sometimes just let it go, and sometimes they bite ya back.  So if you make a mistake, just eat it.  If your right and ppl eat at ya, well them ole boys who know their stuff will see that and they will respect you for it.   Just keep your better sense about you.And thats all folksCHRIS
Reply:I stand corrected on that regarding the hippy being a mil spec its the shield arc 85 which is a 7010, but a differnt 7010.  y'all have a good one nowCHRIS
