HELLO FOLKSI GOT THIS JOB WELDING 3.5 OD 1" WALL THICKNESS IN A "T" JOINT TO 4.5 OD PIPE WITH A 1.5" WALL THICKNESS. HOT ROLLED SEAMLESS TUBE MILD STEEL. NO INTERNAL PREASURE, THEY ARE FOR A THUMB ON A TRACK HOE. QUESTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS1. ANYONE EVER SEEN A FISH MOUTH LAYOUT TOOL FOR PIPE THIS SIZE?2. BEST WAY TO CUT FISH MOUTH AND BEVEL FOR WELDING.3. HOW WOULD YOU WELD IT MIG FLUX CORE OR STICK?4. Reply:In something like that I usually just mark it as I think it will fit, and then cut it with a torch and check it. Then trim as nessecary until i get the fit like I like it. as far as how to weld it, I don't think it will make a difference as long as its welded solid. Use which ever you prefer or feel most confident with.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Definitely preheat just up to about 200F. It will prevent root pass cracking as the 1" thick wall will suck the heat out quickly. If you decide to use mig, i'd suggest spray transfer. Personally I'd feel more confident with 7018 stick.
Reply:Alot of pressure can be put on those thumbs. Fit & Bevel, full stick weld,. I've never heard of Pipe being used for a thumb, except to act as a hinge sleeve for solid bar at the base plate. any drawings?Here in the Great White NorthMosquitoes can't fly at 40 below
