Need info on welding 45s

I was wondering about the proper technique for welding 45 degree angles on sqaure tubing.  It is necessary to grind each edge of the tube at an angle before welding?  Or, will the weld penetrate sufficiently that when its ground smooth it will still be strong?Thanks!
Reply:I guess the penetration that you need/want would depend on the thickness of the tubing, and the strength required of the weld would depend on the application to which you put the angle..., but since you are only welding from one side (the exterior of the tubing), you might want to grind just to assure max penetration if you are grinding flat afterwards.  Proper technique would likely require beveling, but....I use square tubing all the time to make/repair cattle feeders and the like...I dont grind much anything there, regardless of the joint.  Cows dont sue much.  I would be a bit more picky and wouldnt cut corners on say...stairs or a bumper hitch.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I'm with smithboy.A lot depends on you, the thickness of the tubing and your choice of welder. If you are going to grind flush then you'll need full penetration on the two flat sides anyway. The outside corner is another story. You could gap it a teeny bit, grind it, or on thin stuff, go for it. If it's moderate thickness (ummm 120 wall???) and you don't grind it then you will definitely want to see that key hole open up and close all the way along the bead. Thicker than 120 and I would for sure bevel it out.
Reply:I'm planning on using 3/16" thick material with flux-core.  I was planning on grinding since this will be used for shed doors and covered with exterior siding.
Reply:wicrules, I would bevel the 3 outside  welds but only just a little. Like maybe a 1/16? Just a quick de-burr with a grinder is probably good.
