A friend of mine has a 14 year old son with MS. He really wants a bicycle, but doesn't have the balance to ride a 2 wheeler. After seeing how much 3 wheeled bikes cost, we've decided to try and build one. We might have a 2 wheeler to start with, still have to figure out which to use, and what kind of metal it is. If we can keep it lightweight enough, we may even be able to do a swingarm with some type of suspension. Any ideas?
Reply:Why not adapt training wheels to a regular bike like "They used to?"...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:That would be the absolute easiest way, though some bikes are now being done from alluminum. You cut hack off the rear, set a sproker even with the front sprocket and attach it to a rear axle, figure out a way to get a frame back there and throw on some small wheels, so it doesnt take a lot to get going.
Reply:Check out the recumbent trike plans at http://www.ihpva.org/com/PracticalIn...ons/index.htmlThis might be the way to go and the plans are free.
Reply:Contact Larry Bowden [email protected] He also has a web site:http://www3.sympatico.ca/bowden10/index.htmlHe has a vast of knowledge and has built trikes for kids who need some help!He a great guy also!
Reply:Also you can check out some trikes here.http://www.atomiczombie.com/They are designed to be easy to build out of junk bikes, simple materials and minimal machining.
Reply:My only input is to avoid the suspension, keep it as simple as possible so it has some hope of being completed. Not knocking your abilities, I just know how long projects drag out for me. A built a trike for my daughter, custom made all the steering and axles and everything, and it took me about forever. I'd go with the approach of hacking apart existing bikes and welding back together as a trike. Here is a site with a lot of info:http://www.fleettrikes.com/index.htm- John Attached Images
Reply:Here is another builder site with some construction photos:http://www.qsl.net/ws8g/red_recumbent_trike.htm
Reply:I'm not looking for anything major. More like taking a 24" mountain bike and widening the rear end and put in an axle for 2 rear wheels. I don't have any kind of welder at home, but I could probably use a MIG at work, or I could call up my instructor from when I went to school and he would probably let me use a TIG or whatever I might need. I think the hardest part will be getting everything straight, square, and balanced without a lathe or anything.
Reply:You can also find trike kits on ebay for the style your thinking about?
