I need a little help connecting this up. I just bought a Hitachi E71 generator to run my Miller 180. I need to connect the 240 line and I am not sure how to rig it up. It is a L14 - 30P 240. This is what the Hitachi requires. Could someone walk me through the electrical connection? I would appreciate any help!here is the setup..... Reply:you have one ground, one neutral, and two hots. If you have a volt meter, it is pretty easy. If you don't know how to determine the hots, neutral, and ground then you really don't need to be doing this by yourself.

Reply:Hold on a secGot a Pic I thinkBefore we get that farare you using Romex? You really need to get some CordLast edited by Broccoli1; 12-25-2010 at 01:03 AM.Reason: Romex PhotoEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:If you want to use the Romex to run the 180 temporarily... then use the Red & Black as the Hots and use the White as the Ground. BUT please buy some cord.on the L14-30X=HotY=HotW= neutral which you don't use so do not terminate any wires to it.G=Ground.Good thing is you are wiring up a 240v device so even if you were to wire it 120v- not that big o' deal- welder just won't workOther way around and you let smoke out. Gotta go see if Santa ate the cookies yet Last edited by Broccoli1; 12-25-2010 at 01:10 AM.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Basically on that 14-30 you're going to be using the two straights and the U shaped almost round. The round is the ground and the straights are the hots. The black and white will be hot and the (ahem bare) green you don't have will be the ground. Leave the 'L' lug unoccupied. Like Broc says you really should be using some kind of flexible cord material.Ooops, scuse me I see you have the twist lock. Use Brocs drawing and ignore the my above statement about the 'L'. lugLast edited by Sandy; 12-25-2010 at 01:16 AM.Reason: Correction"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:I do need to get some cord. SO, I suppose the questions is - what is the ideal setup for this combo -- Miller 180, Hitachi E71? I would like 50ft of cord. What is the best most affordable cord and where do I get it??Last edited by Down&out; 12-25-2010 at 02:52 AM.
Reply:You can buy 50' of 8-3 (8 gauge, 3 wire) SOOJ or SOOW 300 volt outdoor cord at Home Depot or Lowe's on the bulk reel, priced by the foot, for not all that much money. You can get away with less expensive 10 gauge if you're short on money.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
