This came in the other day.  I get a couple a year.  This one wasn't bent, or missing pieces.  He just took some pieces out.  When I ground it down with an aluminum wheel, I found a spot that was cracked.  Gear oil kept weeping out of it when I was grinding.  I managed to seal it on the first 2 passes.  I built it up with some 5356, then 4043.  Both worked well, the 4043 flowed better.  Machine is a water cooled Arcmaster 185 set on 150 amps, 125 Hz, 40% + wave (cleaning).  I laid a couple beads, ground it more beads......  I used a file to get it straight.Other sideNapa satin black high temp engine enamel.  Good stuff.  Slow drying, but.....It will stay there.I switched between 3/32 red and gold.  The red seemed to attract stuff to the point, or it was breaking down.  The gold seemed not to do that.   I dunked em both a few times.  None like that.Note the plug in the first picture.  It took about an hour.David Last edited by David R; 05-27-2008 at 07:58 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Those are the fun jobs. I do lots of boat motor repairs with most of it being build up of rock damaged parts. Reply:Man, you did a good job. I use an old spool gun on mine as well. I draw file it as well to straighten it up and take out the grinding marks-just like you did.
Reply:Great job on the repair Dave.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:36 grit flap disk on a grinder works real well for shaping and blending skeg repairs. If you dont over work the disk they dont seem to plug up with the alum. grindings.
Reply:I use alum wheels on my 4 1/2" grinders. They have coarse and fine. The fine is like a fast file; actually I use them as my mill.  My point is: they're made for alum and never load up. Reply:I use an aluminum wheel to knock it down then hit it with 8'' mudd hog/sander with 60 grit sometime have to use a wax stick on it
