This is a way to get more Logs Per Gallon split with my log splitter..Just add more "Wings" to the wedge..You can buy them but they are really for the splitters with the wedge at the rear.. not on the ram like mine is..But who cares just as long as it works..Parts..Done..Weld..Installed..Works for me!..On some of the bigger logs the pieces get stuck under the new additions but no big deal..The next log gets them out no problem..Less gas..Less time..Less wear and tear on my back..More time for  !I get all the fun jobs.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Great idea a splitter is in my future. Down here I don’t use them a lot for heat but I have the pit going a lot and I’m tired of swing an axe.I carry guns because cops are too heavy. .. ..-.   -.-- --- ..-   - .... .. -. -.-   .... .- .-. -..   . -. --- ..- --. ....   -.-- --- ..-   -.-. .- -.   ..-. .. --. ..- .-. .   .- -. -.-- - .... .. -. --.   --- ..- -

Reply:Once upon a time, when I was splitting firewood for food...I used a splitter that had no hydraulics...  Instead it had a belt-driven flywheel with a small gear on a shaft.  The ram had a rack that engaged the gear.  I would load a log on the beam then yank a handle that pulled the ram up (or pushed it down - I don't exactly recall which) to engage the gear.  BANG! the log was split.  When the ram reached the end of it's travel one spring popped it off the gear and another returned it for another pass.  This thing would out-perform any hydraulic splitter for speed.  Only the most gnarley of logs would get stuck on the wedge.  I just stuff another log on behind it and let 'er rip again.  Bang!  Two at once!I don't recall the make, but it was much like the SuperSplit:http://www.supersplit.com/principle.htm(may well have been a SuperSplit. I just don't remember.)-MondoLast edited by Mondo; 06-04-2008 at 09:53 AM.Reason: Technical correction.Member, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Woa, the fllywheel splitter description sounded pretty scary, but after watching the video I see it's quick but tame.  Very ingenious, never have seen this before, thanks Mondo.
Reply:Great welds as usual.Built my own wood splitter years ago. Actually built and rebuilt until I was happy. For my final wedge I used the following.  1 piece of 2" X 4" X12" 1/4 wall thickness rectangular tubing. 1 piece of 3" x 12" X 1/4" flat plate.  1 piece of 4" X 12" x 1/4" flat plate. 2 pieces of 4" X 6" X 1/2" plate. 3" and 4" plates are welded onto the 2" face of the tubing to form the wedge. Bevel the front edge of the 4" to create a point. For the cross wedge cut them so one end is 3.5" wide and the other is left 4". Weld the 3.5" end to the 4" side of the tubing.  Having the outside edges longer causes the wood to be pulled onto the wedge instead of spreading and going off the ends of the cross wedges. Having the cross wedge located behind the first wedge make it easier on the hydraulics. ThanksGene
Reply:I've thought of doing this to my splitter and was wondering about logs getting stuck under the cross splitter like you mentioned. It just occurred to me that if you set them so they were not perfectly square to the main wedge, but open slightly on the low side, the logs might not ever get pinched. I'm so used to making things square, the idea kind of surprised me when I had it.

Reply:Time for a test run!Do you suppose the angled wings will make for a "shaving" or lift effect on the way in?Do you ever have to back out of a failed split? How about if the wings had a thicker more aggressive "<" shape at the back? With the bottom of the "<" parallel to the frame, so as not to wedge  toward the slide. Once the splitting started, maybe the thick back edge would help peel the cut open.
Reply:Alot has to do when the wood was cut..This stuff was last week by me..Still very wet and stringie with the test runs..If I wait untill September then it will split much easier..But I'm in a rush......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Hey gang. The wings on my splitter are horizontal. Been that way for 10+ years. There is no benefit to angling the wings up. It only increases the size of the block on the bottom side of the wing. If I get a block stuck underneath the wing I push it out with the next block of wood. ThanksGene
Reply:I looked at your pictures again. I cannot make out the shape of your vee on the cross wedge. On your cross wedge did you sharpen it in a double vee?. If so this can cause an issue because the wood is splitting about 1/4" above your opening size. Try resharpening to a single pitch ending at the bottom edge of the wedge. Then the bottom side is flat.ThanksGene
