I'm not saying there is bad welders in here but i do see that they're is room for improvement...i go to hobart school of welding technology..(www.welding.org).. and u all call it hoFart but u guys think it's crap but u got a lot to learn and i've seen ur vertical up and ur overheads.. and i hope u don't do it but don't take it to heart b/c some of u are backyard welders but if u go into your own business please get certified.. hobart teaches everything from aerospace titanium to 6" pipe and tig/stick welding pipe and hoFart is sad that u say that pisses me off actually b/c a company bought out a company and u call them crap... when some of u could actually learn something from hoFart as u call it.. it's not just the machines b/c u know what Miller and HoBart are the same company know...WOW what a change..maybe that would throw u for a loop..
Reply:listin pal you listen carefully if you in welding school you just sit your silly butt down and remember who youre talking to.  Some of the folks on this site are backyard welders.  Some though, me included, are professionals.  For someone like you to come on and talk crap without knowing real welding world from a can of beans is pitiful.  You think hobart is such a good company, well of course you do youre giving them your money.  But theres lot of people giving us their money for what we do.  And beleive it or not apparently if they keep on doing it were not all that bad.  As for telling us what we should and shouldnt do, perhaps you should be the one listining.  Besides for some college boy you sure cant spell to save your danged life.  Just for the record noone here gives two rats azzes about who you are, what you are learning at hobart or anything else.  Kid, youve got a growin up walking into a place and talking such shet.  Ought to mind your manners and  not be such know it all cause you get into the real world, outside of your little school your gonna get your azz beat by some big mean unhobart schooled animal mother who aint gonna like your attidude.  SO I hope you listened to what I had to say cause thats a change that will really throw you for a loop, yeah getting into the real world aint like your high dollar little school that teaches you everything you think you need to know.  Good nightCHRIS
Reply:My seven year old grandaughter can write a better string of blubbering crap than you just hammered out. Missed high school altogether, eh????  You better hope Hobarts tech school can teach monkeys to weld!!!!!

Reply:Well i hope the hobart welding school is a lot better than the Hobart 7010, but then again what would I know, being some sh*thouse welder that only welds for a living. Obviously don't know what I'm talking about,  must learn how to weld. Wait a minute, if I do it for a living I must already know how? B*gger me.
Reply:Look at the time stamp of the post.  I see 11:35 P.M.  Me thinks a little booze was involved.I'm a man.But I can change.If I have to.I guess...
Reply:Alright im thinking about this, and thinking long and hard....does anyone think this guy is even a real person?  Or for that matter a student at the Hobart College.  Perhaps its a punk kid.  Or the janitor at the Hobart school and hes been "persuaded" by fellow janitors to talk shet with the reward being a few welding lessons?  I think its a conspiracy myself.  Perhaps hes really just a martian who hacked into the american internet system and wrote this tryin to get us earthling welders all in a tisssy.  Well whatever it is he sure has gotten everyone to respond..   I gotta say I really do like his opening....LISTEN CAREFULLY     oooooooh    aaaaaaaaaaah  lmao....CHRIS
Reply:hey redneck... i mean i hate to see guys on here tell people that their welds look decent when they wouldn't pass a test and it rubs me the wrong way...there is alot of knowledge to be gained in welding and those guys that call themselves "professionals" could learn more b/c at school we have people that are 55 still coming back and always learning...thats why the companies of high pressure vessels come to hire Hobart students and Alaska pipeline companies...kinda burns my *** but ya know go on and say your crap b/c u know what i don't care b/c i know i'll go farther then u could ever dream..soak that in!
Reply:Listen carefully son, you can talk the talk but I know you cant walk the walk.  You dont want to be here and thats fine.  As far as this stuff rubbing you the wrong way,  you best just get used to it.  Cause you knowyour lil attidude aint gonna solve or fix nothing.  Its a real irritation to meet someone who is green, a virgin in the field talkin like he a danged porn star.  Well boy you aint.  You aint shet.  As far as judging the guys welds, you are getting all mad cause you dont know diddly about welding. You dont know what a lot of us guys know and thats that these welds will suffice for what they are intended.  Not all welds must meet X-ray,  hence most welding aint.  I dont need to argue or explain myself, and I know you aint gonna change.  Your a pretty boy and Ive seen your type all my life.  Id like to see you get a job on the pipeline,  them ole boys would rape your butt soo hard.  The wont just rape your butt either.  They will stretch it out and make you fart white.  If you dont beleive me try it. Get out on them pipelines.  Yeah, you can talk the trash but Id like to see you survive with your attidude.  You think I do what I do cause I cant hack it.  I do what I do cause Ive been in places you would only dream of and made lots of money but you cant raise a family there.  Chances are you wont get butt-raped though.  You wont last a week on the job either though.  Them boys are tough.  Theres a reason they call oilfield workers roughnecks, and the pipeline welders are just as bad.  As far as its concerned if your teacher is tellingyou idiotic lies like that these companies are coming to hire hobart students sure they will hire hobart students, but not no faster than any othre accredited school.  And theres a lot of schools charging a lot less and have better reputations than hobart.  Just a little food for thought.  But yeah I personally dont think I need to worry,  piece of work like you will never make it in my trade.  Better wisen up boy or your fancy lil welding school aint gonna do you no goodCHRIS

Reply:Ok I just could not lay off. It has been my experience that the guys fresh out of welding school are green as hell when it comes to cutting it in the real world. The 15 hours of texas summer fun welding inside tanks (sound fun pressure vessel boy?) and not just once and a while, day after day after day. Or humping the big grinder over your head for four hours at a time till you have aluminum dust in every crevice of your body. I have been welding some kind of metal since I was 15 I am 39 now and have seen dozens of hot shot know it all welding school guys hit the bricks after a day or two. It goes like this 1. show up first day brand new hood and gloves (dead give away) talking all this crap about how i am doing it wrong and my instructor said this and that. 2. call in with eyes burned on day two. 3. Day three "I've come to pick up my last check". time after time. present day I have hired a welder for my shop fresh out of ATI welding school or something like that and I think I will have to let him go. He welds with one hand I asked him if he could weld with both hands he says does that not look good pointing to his welds. I say yea It looks ok but maybe you can go faster if you use both hands that would be pretty cool.( He is to damn slow) My 42 year brother in law that I thought for seven months now smokes the 25 year old tech school "graduate". I have never taken one welding class I learned from guys that where good because they had to be to survive. to sum it up buster you are among some of the best real life welders in the world right here. And the "backyard" welders on this board are getting good because they listen first and ask common sense questions and don't act like know-it-alls. Oh yea Hobart machines suck!
Reply:Way to go Engloid and Robby T.  See junior these are the types of guys that done taught me what I know and every chance I get I still get in and work wiht em.  what ive learned if you keep your mouth shut, ask questions with respect and try your dangest they will show you the ropes.  If you give them the least bit of trouble, and some are more forgiving then others, they are just as likely to cut the rope then to tow you around on a free ride.    I am very proud to call these welders my friends....besides you really should change your name....you aint got the experience to call yourself welder yet!CHRISlol f*ck u TXRedneck b/c we don't have new helmets and new gloves it's a new breed of welders and your scared...lol it's ok thought take your crap and establish your botherhood because talk is cheap and your talk..i'm loving this thread but as far as i'm concerned you can type but u can't weld..thanx have a nice day

Reply:I know if the welding field of work is anything like Carpentry (construction) this guy is gonna get whats comming to him anyways (an *** kicking for running his mouth and being disrespectful)...Oh and hey TxRedneck I just want to thank you again for the tips you gave me a while back on Stick welding..     I havent had much time to get any welding in since then though !
Reply:Three posts and nothing constructive. That what they teach you there? Bet not. You say you are a weldor? Put up or go away. We need to see proof of skil. So far all there is is talk...bad talk at that. BTW, check out some of Engloids pics...then spout some more crap. Won't happen I'm sure. Now speaking as a person who owns a welding company, who might one day hire some one like yourself, you have yet to do anything but turn me off. You said it yourself, talk is cheap. If you have a point to make, prove it. Don't badmouth everyone. When you badmouth my people, you are badmouthing me as well. Now why would I want to even give you a chance to prove how good you are? I absolutely would not....and nor would any of the others I know..and I do know quite a few in several states and in all fields. You are doing yourself a lot of harm going down the road you are on. If you want to work in this business, you need to wise up fast. There are no young guys that own big welding companies. They are owned by the very ones you are running down. Not a good way to start a career. Just ask Terrell Owens how all the badmouthing helped his career. No doubt, he is a good player and the Eagles need him. But there are limit to what anyone should put up with...a fact he found out and will live with for a loooonnnngggg time.Oh yeah I forgot...don't feed the trolls.Last edited by DDA52; 11-26-2005 at 11:48 PM.
Reply:Interesting thread....  The guy reminds me of a couple of "kids" we've had in my local community welding classes.  The guys teaching these classes work all week at real live....wait for it....welding jobs...  And these kids think because they've read a book or watched a video they've got it nailed cold.  Now me I'm OLD (53) so I ask lots of questions and ask to be shown how to do something.  It might take me a while to get it right, but that's becasue I'm kinda of a perfectionist. I wanted to see how to weld pipe the other weekend.  So I asked to be shown how it was done.....of course my big mouth caused me to have to cut the pipe, bevel the edges, etc......while our esteemed teacher gave me grief...  Turns out more than just myself wanted to see how this was done so it was instructional for everybody.  Not as "easy" as it looks....My long winded point is that I learned how to setup pipe to be welded, how to tack 4 points around it (4"pipe", and then how to actually lay the root pass correctly.  And the guys who thought they had it nailed had a hell of a time getting a decent bead.....  All of this knowledge from some guys who have "only" been doing this for a living for 20+ years.....just my amateur two cents worth of opinion.....
Reply:Well Newfie its my pleasure to help out a weldor friend.  I gotts to say im laughin though everytime this boy starts talkkin though.  Seems like no matter who says what hes gonna jump on my back.  I mean that whole thing about the new gloves and hood,  I dint say it lol but hey I love the attention.  Keep it coming.  But I know he is doing it cause he really dont want to piss some of these guys off.  I guess he doesnt realize were like the 3 muskeeters...Canada weldors, Yankee weldors, and Southern weldors  hehe. Most importantly he dont seem to understand as DDA mentioned that he has an oppurtunity to either impress or piss off a lot of people.  If he really wants to get into this trade, theres a chance he will run into some of these folks.  But even if he doesnt, it dont matter his attidude cant change quick enough to save him.  He will get bent over and they will stick it to him.   Theres a lot of pussie foot'n around in the industry and that leads to this sort of crap.  But theres still a lot of the old ways and nothing gonan change that.  Especially if he plans on geting into the sorts of jobs hes talkkiing about..haha  alaska pipeline my azz!  Titanium welding my, uh pipeline!   You know though its people like this that really remind me what respect is, and what it isnt.  It also tends to allow me to see when I show others respect what it offers me, or atleast I get to see what I could be denied for not showing the respect.  Oh well,  besides I dont feed the trolls  I choose to eat them for breakfast lolCHRIS
Reply:Come on folks, we all know the drill,; Dont play with the animals! We dont really know if this guy has a point or not. Not enough info but what he gives and maybe he's just playing everyone. Reply:Chris, I got no problem with a quick draw Texan! I just hate to see things get too out of hand. Hobartboard just went through this and while it was entertaining to read, it did get out of control. I've been and done and so have you. We got nothing to prove. This guy may or may not be a jerk, we dont know. Let him post some pics and see what he does. He might,if he changes his approach, turn out to have really good info that he can share and that is really what this is all about.
Reply:Point well taken TEK...Chris
Reply:I guess when we asked him to "put up or shut up"...   he made his choice?I'd rather have seen pics though.
Reply:Unfortunately, I see more and more of this in a lot of different fields.  Must be that whole "new" style of teaching where they don't want to hurt the little children's self esteem so they give everyone A's and B's because nobody can fail.  We get these youngsters coming in thinking that they know everything and decide that they are going to change everything because they learned it all in a book. Now, granted, there are also some new things being taught that some of us old-timers could stand to pick up on.  I had a friend that was a paint and body man.  Old enough that when he started at it things like respirators and such were a "good idea" but a lot of people didn't use them as much as they should have.  Then the formulations for paints changed and instead of just slowly rotting your mind away, they out and out killed you.  I buried my friend a few years back. There has to be a balance of continuing to learn as well as respecting those who have learned a thing or two.  Personally, my mantra is that I'll stop learning when they plant me six feet under.

Reply:PA, Im saddened by your loss.  I know its difficult, especially when you know it could have been prevented.  Still, I was an arrogent, cocky SOB when I was younger.  I thought I ruled the Earth casue I went to welding school.  It dint teach me shet.  I am not saying its a bad school, im saying school gets your entry level training and gives you a lot to start with.  But going out on the job, and learning from the elders,  well tahts where your eally learn. Ive learned if you cant show respect to others, its a sure sign you have no respect for yourself.  By putting other people down you are really trying to build your own self up.  I dont have this problem because I know somedays I eat bear, and other days the bear eats me. If I get to caught up with how good the bear tastes, that bears gonna bite my butt.  Its natures way of keeping us all inline.  Anyway, thats just me.  And as for only retiring from learning the day they dump me in the clay....Im a firm beleiver in that.  The devil dines on an idle mind so if you aint learnin you aint livin.CHRIS
Reply:Agree with you wholeheartedly, TexRedneck.  Guess the point I was trying to make is that some of the ones that "have been around awhile" also get into the mindset that they "know everything" and don't pay attention to some of the ways the world is changing around them.  I've learned a few things from the "newbies" that have the book learning that is more up to date than my own.  As with anything there is some give and take.  I find that if my attitude is that I could stand to learn some new things, those around me figure that they can stand to learn some new things as well.
Reply:I beleive the trouble is ones who know onoly the books,  and those who cant be bothered to dust the books off,  or the new onesCHRIS
Reply:Not to brag or anything, but I have never been to any type of accredited welding school or training, everything I have learned has been through either ojt or trial and error. I am currently employed as a thin gage TIG welder ( have been for the past 20 years) in the aviation repair industry and make enough to support me and my family in a very high cost of living state. My point is ( like others have said on this thread) book smarts can only take you so far, what counts is when you get into the real world and do it for a living, until then either put up or shut up!!  BTW I am also a fairly good MIG welder ( not as good as others on this site), but I can hold my own, don't ask me to stick or OA weld, it wont be pretty
Reply:I learned very little from books.  I find that there's not much for knowedgable welders that also author books.  Therefore, you get a writer that goes out and finds what he thinks are good welders, and interviews them...   and he gets a lot of incorrect information.  In addition to that, even the things he hears that are correct, he has to "translate" in a sense, and is very liable to misinterpret something when he write it up.I have little faith in books, since so much of what I have read in them is either old data or simply wrong.  Some publications that you can pretty well depend on are things like AWS and ASME stuff, common things like "The pipefitter/welder's Handbook" and similar things that you can obviously tell were written by the people that did the work and know it firt hand.
Reply:Geez....I ask the guy for pics, and all of a sudden he disappears.
Reply:Amen redneck , I run a rig for 15 or so years , Now I teach welding .These kids nowadays wouldn't make a pimple on a welders azz .And this guy probably wouldn't make one on a helpers azz.I learned all mine old school an make a dam good living at it .Them kids gotta learn school don't teach you everything , But need toshut up and respect us older welders they will learn a hell of alot more than that old school .
Reply:Well, I loved reading this thread...and figured I'd dump in my 2 cents from a different industry.  (try not to kick me around too much, I am definetely a youngin' compared to most of the folk on here 26 years old and all).  But getting to the point, I work in computer security...not an industrial art by any means.  This thread seems to be pointing out that my industry and the welding industry (and probably most other industries) work the same way.  There are three things that will get you respect in the industry I am in:ExperienceHumilityHard WorkWe get alot of kids (some of them quite a bit older than myself...but we still call them kids until they can do the work) who think that since they went to college and they've taken a bunch of computer security courses and they have some certificates that they know what they are doing.  What we find every single time, is that not only do they not know what they are doing, but also that what they do know is often times more of a hinderance than if they just came in green and with an eager mind.  This all really comes down to the difference about what you will learn in real life doing the real thing with a willingness to learn and a respect for the work you are doing and a vested interest in doing your best no matter what it takes versus learning the concepts and details in a classroom and thinking you know it all because of that.  Well, that's my 2 cents...you can all let me know if you think I'm full of sh**.  BTW, I love welding, and I find it relaxing...but I'm no where near professional, I just like doing projects for myself and my friends...but I know I'm an amateur and I would never try to compete with someone who has experience under their belt.
