Hey gang, wow its been a while since I've been on here.  Been busy since my house was flooded last year and everything else..    miss some of you guys  lol   just some  Anyway heres the deal.  I did a job last spring and part of the payment was a full bottle of 100% argon 200 size (I think).  Our supplier was in for some other gas exchanges and had showed him the tank I was given.  And like I expected it was a dud tank.  Meaning it was out dated and no lws would fill it.  I thought so when I got it.  But the conversation turned to" you wouldnt want to use that gas anyway because its probably not good ".  I dont think I've ever run into that and or forgot there was such a thing.  So has anybody had problems with "old gasses"?    I was going to use what was in it and be done with that tank.Last edited by lewray; 02-27-2011 at 05:47 PM.Reason: sp weld it like you own it
Reply:Should have kept it in the fridge
Reply:The gas will not deteriorate. It is OK to use.MM180Smith O/AMaxstar150STH
Reply:If a tank is old, they just test it and stamp a new date on it,not expensive.Argon is an element, it can't spoil.
Reply:The only precautions dealing with 100% argon contaminating welds I know of is when they fill the same tank.  Generally you want to wait several hrs. weld it like you own it
Reply:Did it smell sour?Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Argon has been around for millenia, and will be around for millenia more, in a bottle or not... I'd use it...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:as previously stated, don't toss the bottle. i bet the deposit is $250, and it should only cost $15 to $25 to have it rehydoed. i have used oxygen from the 40's and turned in the bottles with no problem at Airgas. before you have a hydro test done, i would find at least 4 places that offer the service for quotes.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:It would be a shame and a waste to just pitch or give away a good bottle. Many of the bottles I have used have had "Many" years of inspection stamps on them.

Reply:Originally Posted by oxygen454Im curious as to why you would wait as well. I know when filling you have to fill and then wait a bit as the gas can heat up causing expansion. Once the tank cools down again, top up the tank. Our gas supplier does this. He says if you fill it till it says full and the gas or bottle is warm, you actually are getting screwed out of a true full fill.
Reply:Yeah still not sure why 4 hours tho after filled? Like I was saying, the guy filling the bottle files it till its full... then he waits I think 10 minutes and the gauge actually dropped as the tank cooled down, then filled more till it was full again. Not something that would have ever crossed my mind.

Reply:Ya some of the guys are pulling your chain. Argon does not go bad. The tank would have to like rust from the inside or something and I dont even think that is possible... rust needs oxygen to accumulate from what I learned in chem.
