I've been enjoying reading everyone's post. It's nice to find a place where there is so much experience. I've made a few small jigs that were in a few posts. I'm not a pro but I do enjoy welding and building things. This past weekend my dad and I built a wheel chair lift. We found that most of the reese mounted ones are often made for the small electric scooters. My stepmother uses a full sized one which weighs nearly 300#. Here is the first one that we made. They are all pretty much in order. Unfortunately I didn't have time to get a picture with it all fully completed. That's why I use a pic of our first build as a reference. If you wish to see more let me know. Attached ImagesLast edited by step7720; 05-26-2008 at 08:56 PM.
Reply:Welcome to the forum, good to have you with us. Nice idea. I would love to see some more picts, especially from the sides to see how you set it up. Can't really tell how it works from the pict exactly. Edit: Ah. I see you edited while I was typing. Thanks.
Reply:Here are a few more. It is the first time I've tried to post anything. I'm still having trouble adding anymore pics. This is my myspace page. Go to photos and look in the folder for wheelchair lift. http://www.myspace.com/sparksaflyin
Reply:When I went to my dad's I forgot to bring any extra tips and the one I was using was clogging up. I've built alot of other things but this is the first time that I tried to document it. I only had sat. and part of sun. to finish as much as I could before I had to go home. I hope I get to see it after its painted.
Reply:Good idea and good execution..One thing to address..The 3'rd to the last pic with the weld up..The hole at the top has to go either by grinding or rewelding..That's where the cracks start..Never mind its a hole to gather water and moisture..Smoothen that out and your good to go!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Are you talking about the second pic?
Reply:Zap, the second pic with the notch at the bottom hadn't been flipped over and finished and when we went back and ground the pot whole at the top of the 3rd pic it was smooth as glass. Thanks for the tips. They really mean a lot coming from the pro's.
Reply:Now that you bring it up..The second pic..bottom of the weld..Third pic the top hole..Other than that.. looks good but those areas are what causes failure down the road.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Zap..Thanks. I really do appreciate your input. I've been banging around on this site for about 2 weeks and I've looked at all of your posts and have never been disappointed. You sir are an amazing craftsman. I hope that one day I'll be able to entrance someone with my work, but until that happens I'll keep plugging away at it, as always, thanks.

Reply:Welds look excelent. But I am not comprehnding the whole structure. Is the chair is supposed to go into the truck? Do you have some more pictures where the structure "in action" shown? And then when the chair is being lifted is there person in it?

Reply:So, this structure is permanently attached to the truck and once you lifted the chair, the truck then carries the structure (device) with the chair sitting in the basket. Like people do with bicycles. Is this correct?
Reply:Hai,Nice idea.Congrats for your work on making this. If possible, show us the detailed picture and the need to make the wheelchair lifts.

Reply:Hello there nice job on the wheel chair lift. I went to your Myspace page a requested to be a friend. Looked over your lift and I am thinking about trying to make something similiar. I am disabled and scooter lift prices are for rich folks. I already have several 12 volt winchs similiar to the one your using and have some 2 inch square tubing. My only problem is i dont have a clue on where to get the flooring you used.Thank you and have a great day.Calvin

Reply:I use to build Wheelchair lifts for a few years back when. One of the top things I can advise is to make sure that if your running it with people in it or even without it. Try to fabricate some kind of fall arrest system. You don't need 500lbs falling back down when your in close range or when someone is on it even if it is only a couple feet lift. It will surely leave you needing to change your pants or the chance someone could be seriously hurt. |
