Being my first "iron" gate, this was just another learning curve project. The old gate situation had run my patience out! OK, slide show time...I busted out the old wooden junk seen tacked in place temporary to this dock box on wheels. In the lower right is the new post hole. Here it is.This old trailer bumper will suffice for a new post. Incidently, the metal crate frame under it is the reason I tore the old gate out in the first place. It wouldn't fit! That will be my new welding table. Plant the post. This crate will need looking after later!Last edited by tanglediver; 06-22-2008 at 05:10 AM.City of L.A. Reply:I had some left-over tubing from a truck rack that fit the budget! Now it will frame the gate itself. It had to be wider than the one it will replace. But in playing the measurements by ear, I had to shorten the span for an even 4' of vertical bars.Good enough. I got a couple of 20 foot lengths of "vines" from the local steel supply, and had them cut at 12', it divides by 4 that way.So, they fit in the 4' space now.A pair of hinges. And see what it looks like in place...City of L.A. Reply:Nice gate Danny.  Now a little scuff, primer and paint and it will last a long time.  Longer than the wood. Will the pins come out so you can remove the gate as well?  Though it look like it will open a little more than 90 degrees.
Reply:Nice gate.  Well thought out.

Reply:Not trying to be critical as the work looks good, but, you need to 45 the corners of the frame. That way water cant blow in and rust it out from the inside and wasps cant nest in the tube and sting someone when gate is opened. And you should never use that kind of hinge on a gate. Almost impossible to oil and will get sticky. Use regular gate pin hinges, both turned up so you can get the gate off easily to repair it if it ever gets damaged. If you need to keep dogs or livestock from lifting it off you can drill a hole in the pin and put cotter pin in it. If it needs to be where people cant lift it off just weld a piece of metal to the post above the pin and sticking over it.

Reply:I appreciate the critique Bob. I have some plastic caps for the ends, but I may try to weld some metal plugs later if I get the inspiration for light guage work! I don't get nearly enough stick welding practice and ended up going back to DCEP 1/8"  E6013 at 95 amps. I wondered why at first when I left the amps down in the 70 amp range, none of my tacks were fusing!  Then I read the box and saw my mistake. City of L.A.
