I found a good powdercoater near me that does great work. Basically he did about 140' of railing and fence for me for about $11/ft . It's gorgeous, black with a clear over it. Anyways my clients decided they wanted an additional 2' of fence on the side of their house, I build it and now my powdercoater wants $30/ft for this. I understand that it is a small piece and prices go down with volume. But I was hoping for a little deal.  Or maybe I just don't understand the nuances of the industry yet. pic1: completed work @ $11/ft pic2: addendum @ $30/ftthanks, B Attached Imagesars sine scientia nihil est

Reply:$11.00 IS CHEEP. I am paying $25 a foot. Most of the same amount of work for that small chunk as he has in the many feet. economics of scale at work.
Reply:He may have a sizable set up fee.  On a small part, the set up fee will be a larger portion of the total bill.My name's not Jim....
Reply:It's costing him the same to crank up the oven whether or not it is full.  If he can fill the oven with a bunch of your work, it is easy.  It all shows up at the same time when you bring it, it is all picked up at once, and he only has to write 1 invoice.  If he has to fill the oven with your part, and 10 other folk's one off parts, he has to stop work to quote 11 different people, has to take in parts from 11 people, write 11 invoices, and so on.  I have a part that if I take 1 at a time, they are 15 bucks per, but when I take them 8 at a time, they are 8 bucks per.Ultimately, you should be charging that way for your fence.  Your per foot price is going to be significantly higher for that 2' section as it was for the 140 feet, as your setup time is the same either way, you still had to order steel in both cases, still had to order decorative doodads for the top (clearly I'm not in the ornamental iron business), etc.Last edited by bassboy1; 03-08-2011 at 09:36 PM.Who is John Galt?

Reply:Hi Zora! What's already been said--$60 for setup and run charge. That's reasonable.Ask the coater in a nice way about this.As far as setup and run-depending on what the coater's own equipment and process flowis; that can include:Separate racking of just that one part for processing and baking--a biggey.2 changes and clean outs of the gun system for the black coat and the clear, plus cleaning of the booth each timePlus miscellaneous handling.???for surface prep. is this coater sandblasting then iron phosphateor sandblast only??Blackbird
Reply:Thanks guys,  I suspected that, but I didn't know.  Originally Posted by dave powelson???for surface prep. is this coater sandblasting then iron phosphateor sandblast only??
