So I finally got a camera, well ok, I bought my fiancee a camera. and its pink. BUT!Now I can take some halfway decent pictures of stuff from work. Today all I could find around the house was this doorstop I made. A little overbuilt Three passes of Lincoln L-56 with 90/10 at 24 volts, 400 ipm Attached ImagesYup
Reply:This week I am repairing a couple things that may be pretty interesting, some retorts from a heat treating operation and a cardboard bailer. I am also building up some surfaces on some patterns for a company and I will see if they would allow me to take pictures, that would be cool.Any advice on working the camera? there is no "macro" mode I know of. this seemed to turn out ok but kinda bright and its seems like its only focused in the middleYup
Reply:Congrats on the camera Burnit,I've  really had a bad camera year, went through about five of ‘em. The last one I told the store clerk she could pick the color, she chose pink, and I was going to accept that. She changed her mind at the last second and I ended up with blue. Fujifilm Z20, so far so good... What's yours?Good Luck
Reply:I'm by no means a great photagrapher with digital. Film I can do well. Heres a few things that I have noticed with these POS point and shoot cameras.Move back and zoom in. The farther back you get the easier it seems that the camera can focus as the near and far parts of the weld are closer to the same difference from the lens. In your pict the near side of the weld may be  say 6" from the lens the far end of the 8" weld would be almost 2X farther away and the camera has a harder time focusing. If you backed up to say 6 foot and tryed to take the pict the same 8" weld would only be  1/12 farther way and still be in focus.Crop the image you take from farther back and resize. If you shoot at hi resolution then crop and resize you can save the detail and move back to shoot sio things stay in focus. Flashes are a pain close up. I find they tend to cause problems on focusing with shinny things like welds. I try and light my stuff with my halogen work lamp so that the camera doesn't want to fire the flash.Try and focus on something other than the weld bead. The shinny surface sometimes plays havoc with the auto focus. I try and focus on say the edge of the plate or the welding table ner the weld. The farther back you stand the more likely that it will be close enough to the focal  point you want.If you can adjust the apeture shoot as tight an F stop as you can. This is mostly for SLR's. The larger the F stop the more things are in focus in the same pict. Again standing farther back helps alot.
Reply:A little fuzzy, but it looks like you're a better welder than a photographer.
Reply:Actually it is quite sharp- where it focused- and that will always be a problem with Macro shots and when the F stop is wide open.Unless you have a Manual Mode and Stop down the F stop you will always get a shot like this.If you look at the section (about an Inch)  which is in Focus-- that is the Depth of Field area so if you were to Focus on the end of the piece, that same size area would be in focus at the end- Same goes for iffin ya focus on the Front area. It takes a little more fiddlin' with the Camera to get everything in Focus. In Macro mode you will never get the entire piece in Focus when it is on an angle - Macro has a very shallow Depth of Field.Example: You can shoot a Quarter straight down and it will be in Focus but now shoot the  Quarter from and angle and the front edge will be out of focus if the middle is in focus and if the front edge is in focus the middle will be out of focus.Clear as Mud?Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Pretty clear...but also remember that a lot of photography is knowing what angles to shoot.
Reply:Congrats man. Now you will be able to take some nice pic's of Pictou Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:What Broccoli-man said about F-stops and depth-of-field.Also, not all cameras have the same limits for zoom ratio versus close-focus distance, some can focus closer at wide-angle settings on the lens and some can focus closer at more telephoto settings.  And the relationship between focal length and close-focus and effective magnification can also vary from camera to camera. So RTFM and practice and experiment to see what happens. Some cameras might not call it "macro", but if they have a hieroglyphic of a Flower (as opposed to a MountainRange), that is usually the 'macro' setting.Like mentioned, turn the built-in flash off for 'fussy' close-ups.  Especially on reflective/shiny things (like smooth metal) where the glare will usually ruin the image.  It takes some practice and fiddling to get good flash close-ups.  Use natural sunlight or some regular lights so you can more easily see any glare problems as you are composing the shot and adjust light-subject-camera angles as needed. And if at all possible, set the aperature to as small as you can (biggest f-stop number) to maximize depth of field (how much of the image is in focus), especially for close-ups.And get a tripod or other camera support.  Making sure the camera is steady (rock steady) helps greatly with image quality, especially on close-ups.Burnit, what camera is it other than "pink"?

Reply:To get around that depth of field thingy: instead of shooting from an angle, shoot the pic from 90* to the weld.9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Miller Syncrowave 250
Reply:My $.02 use optical zoom only.  Take your pictures on the highest setting and if you have to shrink them done do so on your computer because the algorithms in the camera are not as good as the ones on your PC.Oh and throw a dime in the pic.Lincoln  225 AC/DCMiller Maxstar 150C&H gasless MIGVictor Supper range IIMiller Elite Big Window7 X 10 mini lathe
Reply:Yah, pink cameras generally don't take as good pictures as non-pink ones, although I suspect it is usually the operator's fault (DOH!   )Nice welds."A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."
