This is the welding table I finally finished. I have to say if I new how handy a solid steel table was I would have done this years ago. Best thing I did was build this table. The top is 1/2 in. steel 2'x4'. Legs are 2" square 3/16 and the frame is 2'x2' 1/4 angle. I ended up bolting the legs to the lower frame instead of welding so if I ever needed to roll something heavy around I can take the table off and use the rolling frame. Casters are 6"x2".  The vise is just a wilton Home Depot unit I picked up for 50 bucks. Most the table was scrap including the top that a guy gave me last year. Attached Images
Reply:Next up are the welds. Could someone tell me if the one with the arrows are normal or is this a sign of being turned up to high. Attached Images
Reply:Nice, that is on my list of first projects once I get the weld looking better. There is a nice plan on the Miller site. I have the same vice.
Reply:Nice job man, Looks sharp. The arrows are pointing to a little undercut, could be caused by too much heat or travel speed being a little high, and other things, but its not by much.Ideally you dont want any undercut. More practice will solve it. Good eye, the rest of the welds looks greatYup
Reply:Looks good from here..One thing..Be careful if you put something with some weight in the vise and start pounding on it without some counterweight on the other end of the wagon..Because that's what will happen..The center of the vise is out past the wheels...Stranger things have happened......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Looks good. I agree with burnit on the undercut, but in this case it isn't anything to worry about. Lincoln has some good reading on undercut, the causes and methods of eliminating it as well as other defects. The plate looks like it might have had scale or heavy rust on it resulting in mild pitting. My experience has been that this contributes to undercut. Don't ask me why. I studied art, lol.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:looks great. i like the simple design and the vise. grass is nice and green too http://www.aloumac.ca/
Reply:Very nice! Do the legs tip inward...or is that an optical illusion? I like the whole idea of having mobile carts. I have several. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Nice cart...Is it an optical illusion/camera angle or are the legs angled in?Pretty good welds---but--- the bead "pictures" are the best I've ever seen posted...they leave no doubts about what you were talking about...crystal clear shots.*** ( I see I wasn't the only one that noticed that)**
Reply:Nice table, that will serve you well for years to come.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:If that table even thinks about getting tipsy, which I doubt, you could plant a 110 pound anvil on the opposite corner!  http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...r/P3220006.jpgLast edited by tanglediver; 07-11-2008 at 01:01 AM.Reason: photo sizeCity of L.A. Reply:Thanks guys and yes the legs do tip inward or outward going down depending on how you want to look at it. With the table only being 2 feet wide I wanted as much stability as I could get so I cut the legs at a angle so they would be as wide as the base.I can tell you it is very handy to be able to roll a solid table anywere I need it.The table is drilled and tapped so I can unbolt the vise quickly and use the bolt holes to bolt down my tubing bender or any other accessory I end up getting in the future.
Reply:Great cart and table!  I would tend to agree with Zapster about the vice and the wheels relationship.  I might have put the swivel casters with the brakes under the vice end.  My table has wheels on one end, the vice (exacly same as yours) on the other.  When I get to yanking on stuff clamped in the vice the table wants to move.  In your case that yanking may tend to tip the table up on those wheels and not being locked it could zing out from under you in a hurry! Even if the top does weigh 163.xx pounds. But you will figure out these limits soon enough!Good work!-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Just add a couple of stabilizers on the end with the vise(the swivel wheels lock) out of some all-thread (or long bolts)and some nuts. When you set-up to work just stabilize the end with the vise and when you quit just retract the stabilizers to roll it around again.I'm doing something similar to a bench lathe stand I'm building for the stability as well as being able to level the whole contraption. I got lucky ......I found some brand new 13" long 1&1/4" oilfield flange bolts at the scrap yard complete with 2 nuts each to be able to do mine.Dumb luck at 10 cents a pound the day after I decided what was needed to fix it.
Reply:Decent welds, decent table design. You'll figure out what works and doesn't work on/with the table.  Then you can modify as desired or needed.Watch out for overhanging or side loads, especially with the vise. How did you attach the caster plates to the bottom?  I see nut or bolt heads on the bottom of the caster plates, but nothing on the top of the bottom shelf. Also, the bolts going into the legs are just threaded into the thin 3/16 wall of the 2x2 legs?Nice green grass too.

Reply:Nice welding! For the tricky one (no. 9) going through the corner you get the full 12 points.Shed looks quite big with the truck in it and the large boxes
Reply:Looks slick!!  I like the simple yet effective design, and the portability factor is killer!  Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:I really like the table! It looks solid and the welds look great, except for the one you arrowed out, as stated slight undercut. But for the use the table will get theres no harm in the under cut. And you were aware of it, and could have ground it out and corrected it if you thought it was any problem. And you were correct it's no big deal there, so great job!Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready
