This project is two pieces of 1/4" 309 stainless plate the long one is 5.25" x 10.5" with one end cut to 83 degrees where the smaller plate (5.25" x 7.75") is welded.  This will be used by my uncle as a support for a beam from his deck to his house.  The beam is currently undersupported and is not tied into the building structure.  The reason for the 83 degree angle is in order to allow the plate to sit over the clapboard siding (angled at 83 degrees).  The housing inspector recommended adding in additional support and prior to putting this together, I ran my idea by him.  His view is that it is overkill, but he's happy as it is well past code requirements and being stainless should never need to be replaced even though it is in direct contact with high copper content treated lumber.  Well, here are the pics.  I'm hoping to have more, but I'll have to take them later as the battery on the camera died.Outside corner of the plate:Inside corner of the plate:--WintermuteLast edited by wintermute; 07-13-2008 at 10:53 PM."No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow

Reply:Few thoughts. Clapboards make a poor structural support. If you intend for it to do anything at all you need to be sure it is tied into some sort of structural member on the house, studs, rim joist, or blocking. How do you plan to fasten it? It sounds like the deck is already existing. If you use the plate as an L with the beam sitting on the shelf how will you attach it to the house?  You might want to add some sides to help keep the beam in place as bolts in the thin side of a beam near the end have little strength. I would also add some gussets as if you plan to use it, like an upside down L like I think, the only strength is in the joint not the material. If all of this has already been considered ignore this. I like the SS for the bracket. I wished I had some 1/4 SS to build brackets from for decks.

Reply:Crap. I hate when people are so far away from me. I would have done it in my brake for free!My sister remodeled her kitchen and needed some L brackets made to hold up a little bar countertop. The intent was to blindly support the countertop. So basic triangulated shelf supports were out of the question. So my brother in law had to pay a local shop to brake the pieces for him. Ugh. He saw my brake and asked if I could have done it. Duh...of course. well, thanks for the answer. That makes sense. I would have welded it too if I didn't have a brake.
