Creating "T" by welding 1" plate ant 1/2" plate 304 alloy. the 1/2" crosses the T.problem is cupping of 1/2" on weld side.any sugestions on how to prevent this?eddie t
Reply:You need to lay out more details than that if you expect to get any kind of helpful advice.Process?FIller diameter?Length of piece?Number of parts required?Joint prep? What your saying is that the 1" plate is being welded to the 1/2"? Or vice-versa?Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Nothing will stop the natural dynamics of shrinkage. Unless you are willing to run some autogenous passes on the bottom side of the 1/2" material to try to bring it back close to flat, you will have to machine it flat. Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:I'd suggest: a lot of preheat on the 1/2. Or, experiment with prestressing the bar . Or, pre bending it and letting it cup back into the correct shape.I think experimentation is the only way you're going to get it right. If you're doing many pieces it will be worth it. If not, good luck.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
