Hi,Im an experienced welder, with a decent dc stick welding machine, but limited resources as far as practice pipe, and a good place to weld, ( my welder is in my driveway right now with no way to move it around), i plan on build a welding bench and practiceing right there . anyway i have a portaband and a 4 inch grinder and I want to practice the 6010 root pass , eventually getting to the 6g position on 2 inch pipe, are there any other ways to refine my skills without actually setting up the pipe right away? i was thinking it would cost me alot less time, money and labor at first to use maybe 1/4 steel plate 2 inches wide and 12 inches long, grind them to a 1/8 land and tack them up with a 1/8 gap and weld them overhead, considering thats the position i have the most trouble with on my pipe root pass. your thoughts? Thank you !
Reply:Get some 6mm flat bar and put it into a V and away you go, no need to grind a prep because it's already there. Some guy's I know do the same thing with angle iron, then they've got somewhere to practice the rest of the runs as well. Try running the root with both polarities, personally I prefer straight to reverse but each to his own with that, run at about 120 amps with a 3.2mm rod.Stephen
