I have to make a purchse on ebay pretty quick here, so. Will A stick welder be a good investment if I am going to be using it on exahust piping/tubing? I am looking at a Speedway series 100 amp stick welder on ebay. Also what "Sticks" would you reccomend? thanks!
Reply:stick is not the best chice for exhaust piping because the heat is to hard to control.  a mig machine or a tig would be a better choice.
Reply:i have about 100 bucks to spend, know any models that would work? Alsoo this is my first welding experience. Except I did some Stick/arc welding in shop class about a year ago.
Reply:save your money and wait for a reasonable gas mig for exhaustunless you want to do showcar stuff then get a tig.. ...zap!
Reply:I kind of need it now...I am into a project and decided to weld instead of clamp...
Reply:mabey you could rent a mig if it is just for a quick project otherwise Iam not sure what you could do for 100 bucks
Reply:stick..on exhaust...it can be donebut without alot of experience...your in troubleplain and simple....dont get discouraged now but...IT AINT EASYif you do buy it then get LOTS of tubing that you will be working with and PRACTICE..3/16 7018 at about 80 amps 60 amps whatever..its thineven that may be too much...zap!
Reply:3/32 not 3/16...  I would try 50 amps and only weld a little at a time and let the pipe cool in between rods.  I have triied this a few times and it sucks. it will get you swearing but if your patient you will be able to do it but it will not win the beauty pagent.
Reply:yeah I dont need the welds to look pretty I just need them to hold and stay together. what exactly is the problem with a stick welder on exahust pipe? Should i put it on the lowest amp setting and use what type of stick? The one I am looking at the lowest is 45 amps. thanks
Reply:what tyoe of steel is the tubing and about how thick is it?
Reply:its not the welder its the pipethin and heats up rapidly thus melt thru is easyfireblade has it right 3/32 not 3/16..what was i thinking it will take patience so take your timedont stay in one place too long  and keep the mask on...zap!
Reply:I heard you should use a breather mask? and I will get the gauge and everything...thanks for the help. Any brand stick?what amp? I was reading around and found Lincoln Fleetwood 180 3/32" at 60 amps??
Reply:i never use a breather mask..just a fan from BEHIND you blowing at youi stand off to the side so you dont get "backdraft"sorta like the rubber smoke that follows a car doing a burnoutyou can have the fan behind you but if your in the way........zap!
Reply:I like liquid air rods, but any 7018 3/32 rod should work for you though as far as amps go start at 50-60 amps and work your way up if you have problems with rods sticking or snuffing out,  if you blow holes in the tube you are to hot or you are trying to finish to fast remember if the weld starts to fall through stop and let it cool down for a few minutes otherwise you will just make a total disastor for yourself patients is the key in this application.. good luck let me know how you make out.
Reply:thanks guys I will get it, and try it out maybe just go to the local exahust shop and see if i cant get some of there scrap peices and practice at home. Thanks again. By the way where can I get the rods? Home Depot?
Reply:maybe..hmmm good oneis there any welding supply shops in the area?check the yellow pages ...zap!
Reply:Would a Flux Core auto strike wire feed welder be better to use on exahust tubing?
Reply:Anyone? It ends in about 20 mins..on ebay. Its a CH PN# WF2050. Its 85 amp auto strike wire fed. is this a better choice then an arc/stick welder?
Reply:I think a gas mig would be a better machine for exhaust or a tig if you want to do headers and stuffNobody moves nobody gets hurt(safety first)millematic passportmiller 375 plasmacutter
Reply:I do not have the money for that type of thing, I want to stay UNDER 100 bucks....I am looking at either a stick or a flux core..which one is better for exhaust tubing, and thicker sheet metal.
Reply:I don't know if you made your purchase already but a flux core machine has the potential to do better than a cheap stick machine.    The problem as I see it though is that you are rushing into this purcahse to fast.    You really need to learn a little bit about the processes and the machines before laying down your money.Honestly in this case I believe you would be much better off simply taking the car and its exhaust system to a repair shop for weld up.   Get that taken care of and then look inot the welding technologies used in auto repair.    You are likely to learn that a Mig is important in this respect.    Also a higher quality machine makes a big difference on sheet metals.   Work on stashing away the money to get a good machiine.ThanksDave
Reply:My money will be going into the exhaust piping, turbo, and everything else i need to turbocharge my truck, so thats really the reason why I dont have the money right now...so my question is will a campbell ahusfeld 85 amp flux core auto strike welder make strong welds on exhaust tubing. thanks
Reply:In a perfect world, yes.
Reply:Dont even bother, Grab yourself a nice Miller mig for $900.00 and get the work done.If you dont want to spend more than $100.00 on your welding machine then you might as well stick your exhaust into the drivers compartment then all will be fixed.
Reply:ok sweet guys way to help me out...Ive gotten help from other people, and there are about 1000 people on turbomustangs.com that have used one of these and they say it is fine....why go over board and spend 900 dollars on something that a 100 welder can do the same thing for...if you ask me its OVERKILL...thanks anyways!
Reply:BlackL03Think about the welder to be used for other projects for your Kingdom.  Thicker metals,  The Miller Passport is a 110/220 unit that would be great for your applications.  You can get one for around $1,500.00.   Would you be able to do other work for friends to earn money to pay for this unit? You would be the Kingdom Welder !Just a thought
Reply:I have the millermatic passport and I love this welder. It is great having the 110 or 230 option and it is still large enough to handle 3/8 in a single pass.I have done 24 guage with it and I have tried 3/8 and both worked perfectly. All I can say to you is if you can find a way get this welder you will not be disappointed. It is very portable at just 55lbs. with an 8"spool in it and for the internal bottle any paintball place can fill it for you. When in shop use the external bottle and you have the best of both worlds. It also has the soft arc feature for stainless and wow does that ever work nice. You cannot beat inverter technology that is for sure.Nobody moves nobody gets hurt(safety first)millematic passportmiller 375 plasmacutter
