I was building a 15 gallon hydraulic tank yesterday for a project I have been working on in my spare time. I realized I was out of 3/32 6010 I figured no big deal I had my Ln 25 sitting right there. only problem was I was running 1/16 core shield eight and the tank was 12 gauge. Im sure thats no problem for someone who has ran a lot of wire to weld but a total nightmare for me.Im a newbie when it comes to wire. I welded the tank up in about 20 minutes  then went to pressurize it to check for leaks.   it was leaking everywhere. went into town got some rod and some grinding wheels and went to work. 6 hours later finally had it all sealed up now it looks ugly. I tried to save some time and ended costing me 1/2 a day. anyone else pull that trick?

Reply:We've all been there.  You try your hardest, and get hit by some obscure detail, mainly when the push is production not quality.  Personally, it's paperwork,  I hate paperwork.  You can spend 10 hours burning 140 1/8" rods uphill, but you write "zilch" in the "rods returned or used" column and you get sh*t on for it!  I suppose tomorrow I should write "zilch returned."Petty crap pi$$es me off...Sometimes it sucks working for the highest bidder...Last edited by mb_welder; 07-31-2008 at 08:46 AM.

Reply:When I used to work in the shops we would be sitting around the lunch table and the shop would be very quiet , but occasionally the sound of a grinder would interrupt the peace. That's when you knew that someone had made a "Frankenstien"and was trying to clean it up before anyone saw it. We would all chuckle having been there, did that."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Your mistake is common. So don't sweat it. Just learn from it. We all been there.Your post reminds me of a former employee who really pulled a "dum-dum" as you put it. Except his dum-dum was on purpose and with malice. Not with the thought of short cutting as in your case. The company I work for manufactures high voltage Electerical Distribution centers for the coal mining industry. The average costs for a system like this runs around $300,000 per unit and is pulled around to various areas of the mining operation by bulldozers. No wheels will support it due to the massive weight of the product. so it is built with sleds to make pulling (or dragging if you perfer that term) it around easier.   This "welder" and I use the term loosely in his case, was hired on the recomendation of a supervisor that worked with this guy's father years ago. unknown to him (the supevisor) or the rest of us welders, this guy had a major prescription drug problem. Oxycotens/Loritabs. He got high  one night and welded several gobs of slag on one of these units larger than a man's fists. And it was in a critical support area of the unit that he slagged. An inspection of the unit revealed other areas that he slagged as well. He was told to go home. He was fired, but not over the slagging, but because he came back and got caught stealing copper!  Me and 3 other welders managed to gouge off the slaggings, and grind out what couldn't be burned off. Took us 3 hours to salvage the equipment.  He took 6 Loritabs prior to doing the slagging. Even though the company does drug testing as part of the hiring process, he managed to pass it without any problems. Now the company does several random drug tests on new hires during the first year of employment.
