Im building a set of hydraulic outriggers for an old cable tool well rig I built them out of 8" .250 square tube and welded the outer box out of 3/8 plate. I gave myself a 1/8" of clearance. I tested them with air and they worked fine with no hang ups When I fired them up 3 of them worked fine and the fourth one acted like it had a welding bb in it I ran it up and down a couple of times trying to break it free then it locked up solid. 2500 psi on a 4" cylinder wouldnt move it now im trying to get it taken apart I guess it galled solidly in there. anyone have any idea on how to pull the inner tube out of the box without air arcing it apart? is there any trick that might work.this has me bumded I need this rig by friday and it will take me a full day to build a new jack and puts me way behind
Reply:Hydraulic restriction?  Did you try unhooking the hoses at the cylinder?David  Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I would pull one of the cyl. pins to make sure its not a hyd. issue. If its still bound up take a grinder with 1/16" cut off wheels and split the outer tube in halve. with some carefull welding and spacing the tube should be reusable. Even without 100% penetration you should be able to put a couple wraps around for strenght.
Reply:its definitely a galling issue I have 1/16" gouges in the 8" square tube I was afraid i would have to cut it apart but was hoping for a easy fix not going to happen I guess
Reply:Are the top and bottom both accessible?  If so get a bandsaw blade and run through, clamp a pair of vise-grips on each end, get a buddy and to help and go at it to cut the galling wedge out.  Might want to have a beer or two on hand for the guy helping - and a couple for yourself as well.If it doesn't work start cuttin'MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:thanks for the ideas I will give that a shot and see what happens
Reply:Using the scuff line as a guide, you can probably estimate the  foreign object's location.Heat the tube cherry red in the suspected area, look for a dark spot; that is the binding obstruction. When heated, maybe the spot will dimple, creating clearance; or at least pinpointing the obstruction's location. Once free, or located, maybe you can cut/drill/grind an ejection slot or hole. Maybe you could hole-saw a small hole,  directly over the obstruction.Depending what the obstruction is, you could also try simply smashing it with your "why do I have a 20# hammer?"Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 08-04-2008 at 10:25 AM.
Reply:maybe cool the inside with dry ice, heat the outside, when one shrinks and thjeother expands it might come apart
Reply:thanks for all the help but I finally gave up and cut it apart I couldnt figure out what started it  but I sure got a mess now
Reply:Hows the alignment with the top and bottom cyl. pins? Are they parallel with each other?
Reply:I think that amount of galling would have taken a couple kegs with a 2-man bandsaw!  Sorry you had to cut your hard work apart.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
