I recently heard a story from a friend about a girl who sucked at stick and wirefeed, but was a GOD at TIG. I guess she had been doin stick or wire and a guy told her that she sucked, she then tore a soda can in half, and obviously he was like, "uhhmmm...okay" so he went to lunch, and when he came back, the soda can was welded back together. How difficult would that be, what thickness of tungsten would you need for that, I was told by my teacher (actually my substitute welding teacher, who may be the teacher next year, our current one is retiring) and my father that its possible.
Reply:Its very tough, but can be done.  Ive seen folks do it with 3/32 2% thoriated on ac on argon.  Ive also heard of doing this with dcrp, main stick welding polarity...not tig.  I think they use helium but not really sure.Yeah its tough but as said Ive seen it done.  There are folks who cant make a stick or mig weld, mig particularly to save their butt.  However, tig they are amazing.  Its weird like that.IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:I have seen it done. I tried and failed.
Reply:it seems really hard cos the metal is so thin
Reply:If she simply "tore" it in half I would say no, as in order to weld it back together would require a good fit up with no gaps as it is no thin. I have cleaned the paint off soda cans and ran a bead on them, its not pretty but I have done it, once the can starts heating up you have a tendency to blow holes in them. It is much easier however to butt 2 cans up end to end and weld them together
Reply:With a clean joint, you can do it.Lots of girls are very good tig welders- I had a girl tig welder working for me for a while, and she was one of the very best tig welders I have ever seen- she left to get a job where they paid her a lot more. And the main welding instructor at the tech college near me is a woman- and she can tig, mig, and stick better than any man I know- she spent 20 years or so working in the refineries, with xray tests on many of her welds. She teaches some all woman welding classes- she usually has about 100 or so students, mostly men, but every year teaches a welding for women class with 5 to 7 women in it.
Reply:There was a woman that used to do warranty repairs on multi-thousand dollar bicycle frames in this area.  Here work truck was a BMW.  She must have been pretty good, cause all the bike shops knew her and used her services.  I have read that women on average have better small muscle/motor control...whatever that means.  That's why they have better handwriting and stuff.  I have been trying to get my daughter interested in welding, just to give her some exposure to something industrial...I think she would be really good at it because she is good with detailed work with her hands.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Many years ago I was making some bracketts for custom dressers motorcycle parts.  I gave my wife a ten minute tig welding course and she welded up a whole bunch of them.  It  was mostly 10 gauge cold rolled steel.  She did an excellent job.  I might also add that she is a whizz on a sewing machine too.I have welded coke cans together by butting them bottom to bottom.  The proper technique is to melt the filler into the weld area.  You really need to get in the "groove" to do it without burning through.
Reply:ok heres one for ya I had a retired aircraft mechanic from ww2 show me how to weld an aluminum can together after being cut in half ( WITH OXY-FUEL) now thats an art  , he used a tig when I met him because he said when they came out they made it easyer , but it was amazing to watch, but he said one thing if you can run a oxy-fuel you can run a tig , and majority of women are better than men for tig so go figure
Reply:It is well known that women are GENERALLY better than men at tedious hand and finger work than men . & it helps if lots of praise is poured on them ,so it is obvious they COULD learn to be so good at tig work. They tend excel. & boilermaker is correct when he says"if you're good at oxy-acet, you can tig  good "
Reply:holy snap, the main question for me is how many amps would you have to be running,  im not used to going that cold so its just crazy for me to hear that.
Reply:you have to be cold cold, foot pedal almost a must. ac HF 1/16 pure tungsten would be a plus. super clean too brush it and denatured alcohol or acetone to clean it. would prob. stay with argon since helium boosts the pentration. that how we used to do it when we welded alum foil or copenhagen lids.
Reply:i really wanna learn to weld cold, right now all i get to do is hot, aluminium foil would be a target to shoot for
Reply:The bottoms of two cans is not really that hard. You will mess a whole pile of them up trying but the actual welding of the cans is not impossible it's controlling the greed. two much heat and goodbye to half the can.Millermatic 251Century 180 migSpectrum 625 Syncrowave 250DX
Reply:i did tin foil from my sandwich    once my boss (back then) that taught me to weld can do it all day  ...zap!
