Reply:I had to smile at this thread... it was our last GED class till next fall recently. I wanted them to have a grasp of Pythagorean formula to ponder for the summer.  We were working right triangle examples. All was going pretty good, allowing that we used calculators to figure square roots.   Then one of the truly bright students asked THE ? What if you know a side and an angle other that the right angle... could U figure it out somehow?   I closed the book,  listed the names of  6 trig functions... and could not remember some of the formulas myself off the top of my head really.   Class dismissed till October."What kind of Algebra or Geometry is that?" she asked. They call that Trigonometry, and with that we close for the season"  I replied."   "Oh,  I've heard of that stuff."  she moaned.  I hope we have a bigger class next fall, it is fun for me and a good review for this old brain, and hopefully it will lead to some more fullfilling career for these folks.  That lady cleans rooms at a Motel 6 kind of place now... any guess how many rooms per day at $3.50 each?   U or I couldn't do her job on our best day.  She cleans 27 rooms every day.  Sheesh.Might get to 100 this week, it is possible Thursday they say... Reply:Old surveyor here. If a triangle has two sides that are 1 unit. Add the two sides and take the square root of 2 which is 1.4142. If the hypotenuse is needed multiply the legs or side by 1.4142. 10 foot legs equal a 14.414 feet hypotenuse or cross tape distance or 14-4-7/8 feet. We used this method to check footers and off set sewer lines before lazers.
