Hi I,ve got a oxy-ace torch/regulator set, I,m mainly going to use it for brazing and a little welding, I,m still not 100% sure what i should get propane/acetylene propane startup costs will be much higher since I need a new regulator and my torch has to be rebuilded. But I would like to have a indication about how long I can use a acetylene 10liter cilinder when brazing small tubes (HVAC - so I won,t need that much power) I know this is hard to say but, non of the local welding shops is willing to answer this question. But I,m sure someone can give me a indication. Acetylene is pretty exspensive vs propane so if a 10liter cilinder only last 1/2hours it gets pretty exspensive.Thankssorry for my bad english
Reply:If planning on welding get oxy/acetylene.  I use both propane and acetylene.  Porpane for cutting and heating.   Acetylene for welding.  I use the same regulator for propane and acetylene.  Also, I have a 20 lb tank porpane.  Why does your torch need to be rebuilt?  You will need a different cutting tip and hoses for porpane.  Don't some of the Goss propane/air torches get hot enough to braze thin stuff?Last edited by tapwelder; 05-11-2006 at 10:14 AM.
Reply:Thanks tapwelderMy choice between propane/Acetylene really depends at how long a 10Liter ACE cylinder might last when brazing small pipes (so I won,t use it at full power) I need some indication like 1/2 or 2/4hours etc. Originally Posted by tapwelderWhy does your torch need to be rebuilt?  You will need a different cutting tip and hoses for porpane.
Reply:I would suspect that propane would be the winner for brazing.   Not that I've done any analyzes but as you point out acetylene is expensive. If you want hard facts though you would have to run some tests on the process and techniques you are using.   That would be with oxygen usage in the equation.    You should also consider normally aspirated propane torches.   One other component to the equation here is that unless you are careful a good portion of the on time of a torch goes to nothing but air.DAve
Reply:Propane produces a much lower btu than acytelene, so you will use about twice as much of it as compared with the acytelene. Most larger operations that I've seen will use propane (or Map) for cutting / heating, and acytelene for welding.
Reply:I,m going for Acetylene, its much better for welding and at the end its not that much more exspensive.
Reply:ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO, MY LOCAL WELDING SUPPLY STORE DID A COST ANALYSIS FOR BURNING; ACETYLENE  vs. pROPANE  (AND OXYGEN, OF COURSE ) - BECAUSE PROPANE HAS MUCH LESS BTU'S , ACETYLENE WAS CHEAPER . - NOW- FOR A big COMPANY USING LARGE QUANTITIES OF GASSES , THEN PROPANE CAN BE CHEAPER . mARE iSLAND'S SHOP USED OXY -PROPANE FOR THE BURNING MACHINES , but they had Liquid oxygen in a 1500 gallon tank and a 750 gallon propane tank piped into the shop . When i worked at Kaiser Steel, they used liquid oxygen & natural gas , i hated the natural gas, it was so little heat and even hard to light the torches . the charts will tell you that oxy-acetylene gets about 6300 degrees , oxy-propane  about 5200 degrees (F) & oxy-natural gas , about 4200 or 4300  , maybe ( all  aproximate  temps)
Reply:When I was in the market for a cutting outfit, I looked into this stuff also...I think at the time OA was slightly more expensive (when standardized for cutting efficiency), but porpane costs have jumped lately, so, I am not sure where the line is right now for an occasional user.  The chart I saw was one that compared cutting capacities per dollar of fuel, and what scsmith42 says is what I read also.  Also, many folks opted for propane for safety reasons. As far as changeover is concerned...I thought all that was different was 1 hose, 1 tank, and the cutting tips.  Am I wrong in this assumption, guys?  I bought a torch that was supposed to be compatible with both...or so I was told.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Reply:Seems like everything has it's advantages &disadvantages. propane seems safer. But ,safety aside, acetylene sure  is easier to use,(for  cutting-gas welding, etc )  with the extra heat (btu's ) .

Reply:I don't want to hijack or anything! But Its a quickieOn the same line does altitude affect the efficiency of propane? I'm @ 8000ft and wondered if propane would still be an option?"Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine"However "lack of planning on my part may constitute an emergency on yours"

Reply:i'm not big on o/a welding but thats just me we have o/a in the shop basically for cutting..we do alot of shrink fitting heads into rollers for all sorts of applicationsfor that its propane and oxygen and a rosebud tip(and it will melt a aluminum tube in no time)...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
