Something I was wondering about, I do not heat my shop in the winter   should I remove the spool of wire in my Mig when not it use so there won't be any chance for corrosion to form on the wire, or can you leave it?  Just trying to prevent myself problems.  Thank you for input on this.
Reply:just leave it ...no problems at allafter all its shipped by truck...and sometimes sits in some tractor trailers for weeks on end before its deliverd to its destination...and sometimes for weeks on end its below zero ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks Zapster!!
Reply:well I'm going to have to disagree if its been open don't leave it out in the cold it Will rust i have spools of junk from leaving it on the welder in the winterChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:THe spools in delivery are either sealed or just bagged.  If there sealed its for a reason.  No seal, well just keep an eye on it.  Guess it depends on how much use.IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:A lot depends on your locality.  If you have a lot of moisture and the likleyhood of condensation on your wire (rust) it is a good idea to remove the wire roll and seal it in a plastic bag.  If you live in a dry area it isn't necessary.
Reply:well i guess we should all keep the shops nice and toasty at all times or else all the machinery will corrode too  comon guys!i've had the same spool of fluxcore in the welder in the shed all winter...used it the other day..its finethe shop where i work has the water in the blanchard grinder frost up on cold nights ..yeah it gets that cold herethe wire feed machine and the hundreds of lbs of rod are still good...sometimes overkill happensbe cool ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Temperature does have an effect on corrosion.  The higher the temperature the faster the corrosion rate.  The other more important factor is humidity.  I have an old text on corrosion and one of the lowest rates in North America cited is in the North West Territories.  It is close to desert conditions as far as humidity is concerned.   My point is that it if you don't see rusting on your wire you won't have a problem.  If you live in a very humid area where moisture condenses on your wire then it will corrode and the trace amounts of rust will end up in your gun liner creating feed problems.   If you were operating a pressure vessel shop and left your spare and opened welding wire rolls laying around the shop the inspectors would be voicing their objections.  In tank shops that do critical work they store wire in humidity controlled store rooms.   This kind of measure is not needed for small non critical operations.
Reply:If you are in Hawaii, or Florida, you could consider a big dessicant bag stashed in the housing of the welder, or under a cover for it at night. Otherwise, I think you will be fine if it is out of the weather.
