I wanna make my own trailer (2nd project) after my 1st was a sled jack.   I've got a Hobart Handler 120 (used) and a spool of Flux core wire.  Never took a welding course.Anyone here make their own trailer and like to share?OK.  Did that get anybody's blood boiling? The details.- it's not road licensed.- it's going behind a 20hp JD lawn tractor,  max speed probably 5-8mph.- using it to haul tires, stuff, back and forth to the shed.- might make it a dump trailer.- with the dolly wheels,  the likely max capacity is probably the 500-700lb range.Actually,  wondering if anyone's got picture of their yard trailer that they'd like to share,  or experiences with it.I figure it will cost me about $30-40 of steel,  I've already got some plywood at home,  and some spare dolly wheels lying around.Debating on whether to use:1"x1"x0.100 sq tube  at $15/10ft length1.25" x 1.25" x 0.100 sq tube at $18/10' 1.25 angle iron (1/8") at $13/10'Those are my local prices from the metal supermarket.Peter
Reply:I recommend lots of practice before you build it, just so you have a feel for it...And, think about what it needs to be solid (I'd say 1/8" angle is too weak for 700 lbs), and worry about the price, once you have that established. I'd use 2x3/16, or 2x1/8 at the VERY least for that... The 1/8" angle might be good for re-enforcing the plywood box corners...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:Glad to hear it's not going on the road.  The never-welded-before-but-just-bought-a-110-volt-MIG-and-read-the-manual-so-now-I'm-gonna-build-a-trailer mooks are the scariest thing on this site!   Since you're in Canada here's a great tip:  Drop in to your nearest Princess Auto and pick up their book on "How to Build a Utility Trailer".  It starts with welding, covers the frame, springs/axle, wheels, fenders, how to paint, etc.  Great starter book on trailer-building and only about $20.And if it's just a lawn tractor trailer, you'll be fine with the angle-iron.  Look around the industrial parks for a bit and you'll find someone that is tossing scrap pieces that are probably just the size you want.Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.
Reply:.....And don't buy your steel @ Princess Auto, it's crazy expensive.
Reply:Thx for the replies....  I will definitely check out that book.  I wish I had posted this sooner,  I was just at PA earlier this afternoon (they are about 25km across town from me), and not along my work commute.Right now I've been using my kids wagon to haul the snowtires outta the shed.  http://millside.ca/products/Express-Wagons/  they all have a 300lb capacity,  but my wife wants me to quit using it.I found a guy on kijiij that is selling steel on Saturdays that`s about 20 minutes from my house.  Question.  I assume the red on this is rust, not some red primer... will it be hard to take off with a wire brush? He`s selling steel for $0.29-0.49 per lb.  I will also try to get a 3x4`piece of quarter inch plate to use for a welding top.  I`m wondering how much I would save vs the metal supermarket prices.Peter
Reply:Just rust, it'll come off easy. I sure wish I could find steel like that for that cheap.Campbell Hausfeld 80 Flux Core.Mastercraft AC-230 Buzz box.
Reply:You can use a wire brush to get the rust off for painting. Use a grinder anywhere there will be a weld."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:I would buy a good deal of that steel to have lying around for future projects at that price!
Reply:Thx for the replies.Payload capacity was over estimated.Probably there's now way that it will get to 700lb load.  I am planning on only having it 36" wide at the most.  The deck will  likely be about 3x4' max.  So probably between 12-18cu ft of mulch is the max it would carry (with removeable 12" high walls)I was going by what I thought the weight capacity of my 2 dolly wheels.  Probably the max of the wheels is about 300lbs each. Here's the ad for the steel if anyone's interested.http://kitchener.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and...AdIdZ216400678

Reply:If this is good price for steel.  I might by 10-20' extra.  Should I prime or oil it to store it? or just lean it up in a corner of the garage? I ask, cause it looks like it's rusting already (unlike the stuff u get at the Metal Supermarket. home centers etc)
Reply:Sorry guys,  I've only got MIG,  fitted with Flux Core at the moment.  I need a new regulator before I can try GMAW.No Arc machine.Project is to try to learn, self teach  MIG.Last edited by peteec; 04-06-2011 at 08:24 AM.
