I was just surfing ebay and starting thinking about that. Has any one made a log splitter and used a porta power for the ram? The have those Air Hydraulic Foot Pumps so you can just hook it up to your compressor. 10 tons would split a fair amount wouldn't it? Matt
Reply:Sure it would spilt it, but it would take forever. I have used Enerpac air/hydraulic ram setups and they work great but it is pretty slow, from my experience at least.Yup
Reply:I am sure it will beat a ax.... How about those air jacks... I have not used them what would the speen on them be??
Reply:I've seen some of the manual ram splitters in the HF catalogue. Looks like they have 2 handles. Is that a double pumping action? Never did check into them.I still use a maul, a sledge, and a wedge. You know how the old sayin' goes...... Firewood warms ya twice. Once when ya cut it, and once when ya burn it."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:yes that is true. That is how I split it but it would be nice to have a chance not to split it like that...
Reply:in my opinion, pneumatic actuated wood splitters are garbage. with air, psi in is not psi out. with liquid it is. i have a very large wood splitter. splitting capacity easy 40 tons, and it still has trouble with some splits, if the wood is "wavey" or if it has a large knot. if your gonna buy one, spend the money or make it your self but get a hydrolic one.just my two centsmatthttp://www.aloumac.ca/
Reply:Besides, price of steel, and other hardware has gotten so high nowdays, it is not too economical to build some things. Better off just buyin' 'em. But you don't get the sense of satisfaction. That goes for quite a lot in my book."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Yeah Sam, We actually had a guy bring in one of those splitters with the two handles last week. We fixed so it fit into the hitch on his truck. You can work the two handles and go like hell. But it still doesn't go that fast.Im with you, I like the maul n wedge. But then again I'm not running a burner to heat my house.Yup
Reply:Just my two cents here, I had one of the HF two handled splitters. Used it for half an hour before saying a few choice words, packing it up, and driving it back to harbor freight for a full refund. Not wanting to hijack this thread here, but has anyone had any success with an electric one like a Dr Splitter or others?Would like to get an electric one if it really works.
Reply:I built one similar to the one in the link below. Very, very slow, and the compressor was always kicking in to replenish the air. Not worth it...http://http://www.logsplitter.com/lo..._hydraulic.htm[quotePorta Power for log splitter? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------I was just surfing ebay and starting thinking about that. Reply:69chevy - That's nice. When you can plug in, it's hard to beat an electric hydraulic power unit.I'm curious - If the main vertical started out as an "H" beam, why was the flange and web cut off at the bottom? No flex at high splitting loads? Thanks for the pics.Last edited by denrep; 09-05-2008 at 08:34 AM.
Reply:woo hoo!!!!!! Can that also be run off of the remotes on the tractor?"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Be a shame to sell it after all the hard work ya put into it.NG is set to start goin' up real soon. I hope you negotiated a good lease with good royalties. Sounds real good. Nice to get a good bonus off of the place."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Makes sense about electric vs. tractor hydraulics. I thought it might be a handy standby for working away from the house.Around here they ride roughshod over the landowner when it comes to leases. Up to a few years ago they still allowed perpetual leases I've heard. I'm not too up on it."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
