Hello I curious to know how long are the bottles good for? How much does it normal cost to recert them? I just bought a used OAW kit from a freind, not sure the date on the bottle, but was curious how long the bottles are good for.
Reply:Forever.  I've got some argon/CO2 bottles at school and their first hydro was 1942.
Reply:bottles are good, but they will need hydro.   If it wont pass hydro they are scrap.   Ive used bottles from the turn of the centuryIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:no problem...if theres a issue with the bottle the gas supplier will let you knowin no time when in for the refill   ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:We do things a little different down here We don't own the bottles, we rent themHeres what I do, we go to a gas supplier and pick up a full bottle, then once it is empty we take it and swap it for a full one, Than Lindie, BOC, air liquide or whom ever you use sends you a invoice for the gas and rental once a year. It's not to bad but if your like me and have two O/A sets and a mig with a spare bottle and a tig with a spare bottle that makes eight bottles most of the time and the rental invoice can be large.Simon http://members.optusnet.com.au/~abba/index.html
Reply:where i am now i thought we rented also..turns out we own the bottleswe have 5 large oxy bottles in house at all times3 aceteline3 big propane so if thats what we own.. thats in house ...the same amount must be the amount for the refill bottles...or do you own just whats in your possesion at the present time?i never really looked into itso do we own 11 bottles or 22  math 101  ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:So here's a question, anyone know the mandatory test cycles for various bottle types. For instance for the new propane tanks with OPD valves I think they made it every twelves years or so. And of course in the propane bottle business we all know that means they'll be scrapped every cylce because it will be cheaper to buy a new one than the cost of testing. Serves the gubmint purpose that way of keeping all us sheep safe. Long time since I did any diving but scuba tanks were every two, three or four years?_?_?????How about Oxy or Acetylene tanks?? Five years, ten years???  I just swap so don't have a clue. You basically pay a certification fee every time you swap that way whether it is line shown line item or not.
Reply:For most steel tanks it's once every 10 years, I believe.  Aluminum is every 5, and fiber tanks are every 3.
Reply:I'm not sure about acetylene, never owned one. I'm buying a 75CF acetylene bottle next week, gonna be almost $200 and about $20 to exhange bottles when empty. Right now I have a 125CF oxy bottle and a big propane bottle, probably around 200 or 250CF. The oxy bottle hydro test is good for 10 years and gets the + star rating for 10% overfill. I don't know when the propane bottle last got a hydro test but I know Grandpaw bought it in the early 70's, still the same bottle. I had to repaint it because the whole thing was covered in surface rust, the bottom ring(not the bottom of the bottle) is starting to rust out so it probably won't pass the test.Last edited by RobertDoubrava; 05-27-2006 at 08:07 PM.RD 1984 Chevrolet C30 welding truck1966 Lincoln SA200 Continental F162 1942 Lincoln SA200 Hercules IXB-51991 Lincoln LN25
Reply:here in the UK we have to rent the bottles and have them filled at their own outlets. dont think you can buy them(welding gases) OK for buisness but restrictive for DIY or hobbists some might say its imposible
Reply:Considering the cost of bottles?  I'm lucky, I got a pair of 280cuft'ers for free.  It costs me $140 to get them filled once every 2 years.  What kind of rental fees are people looking at?  I think renting is in the favor of the hobbiest because you don't have to lay down $600 up front for a pair of tanks.
Reply:Here at the local shop you "lease" the bottles for 15 years.  a 175 CF oxy bottle is something like $200 and a acetylene bottle is like $150. after 15 years or if you no longer need the bottles you take them back and get the money for the bottles back.  So I guess it is more like a Deposit on the bottles.
