I find myself, often out on jobs, just fitting , and tacking parts, to return to the shop to weld later, I was thinking of a little portable 110V rod melter, to do some tacking......... Thinkin maybe the Lincoln V160 ..... Any suggestions?I haul My Invertec V350 AP, around sometimes, but not always 220v.Alot of the time, I cant reach with the Bobcat leads... 300ft. is not always enough. Most of the time, I'm out on a dock, and theres almost always 110v.How's about it guys? Red, Blue Yellow, I don't care, "cept my shop is red, and The red pedal will fit, If I find myself tigging...................Anyone have a breadbox, shoulder strap, stick melter?Keep in mind, just a tack, here and there. We need to protect Freedom of Speech, otherwise, how would we know who the A-holes (like me) are.
Reply:red!  go redIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Blue...go blue.  I have been hearing good things about the TA's as well...maybe purple?
Reply:Don......... Purple might be a good compromise..... Not blue, not red, but a little of both!!!I've got all the primary colors already, All of them good. maybe a different "shade" is in order.I wonder if Jacko has somethin, that would go good with soy sauce!..... MMMMMM............. I love Chinieee food!Do I risk it.?  I mean With Jack?  I only have two good ears! Heres to ya Jacko!!!!We need to protect Freedom of Speech, otherwise, how would we know who the A-holes (like me) are.
Reply:If I was looking for a good mid range toaster, something like a Maxstar 200 STR....or similar would get a look. Three phase capable, multi voltage capable, TIG capable. Only drawback would be the limit of 110a on 120vac. I wonder what TA would have like that? I do know they are cheaper than the blue and reds. Lots are happy with the TA 185's...might be worth a look. They are Malaysian I think.
Reply:Just a few tacks with some 3/32.... oh, and maybe keep my sandwich warm. nothin 20amps 120v couldn't pull for a few seconds. Yup, I'll have to look into the TA's.Any have a suggestion? We need to protect Freedom of Speech, otherwise, how would we know who the A-holes (like me) are.
Reply:How about that Maxstar 150?  You can wear it on your shoulder, it's just slightly taller than a loaf of bread and can do stick and TIG.
Reply:If like most construction sites I've been on the 110 is run from long extension cords (50 to 100ft) and you would have trouble getting anything close to 20A into a welder.  You would probably have to run the welder at max setting and use a smaller sticks to get a satisfactory tack weld.  3/32 might work.  The simpler the machine the better.  Ie: no electronic circuit boards which could malfunction under low voltage, or an inverter which could tolerate low input voltage.
Reply:Doesn't anybody know that the extension cords WOULD BE  fine , if you spend the $ to get them big enough ?  in construction, the idea is to make money, well, you have to spend money to make money . I get so tired of people wanting to get by with a lousy 14 gauge or (wow) a 12 gauge cord . when i say "YOU" i mean the contractor who owns the company . I have a 6 gauge cord (6-4) for my sp 250 . bought it( used)  surplus, from contractors , after they finished the " OROVILLE Dam".
Reply:Make your own cords.  You can buy bulk 3 and 4 wire cable at your local hardware store.  The stuff is much higher quality than the chinese stuff they make extension cords out of.  It costs a lot less when you get into the really heavy guage stuff, too.

Reply:Moto Fab recommended the Harbor Freight 80A inverter and no doubt he hashad good luck with it , but in my experience they have a tendency to blowcondensers. HF will replace the units, no questions asked, but unless improvements have been made, I would suggest the Arc One 80A DC inverter.Costs about three times as much, but what a difference in quality, and hasn'tgiven me a bit of trouble for two years now. It's a great dependable unit.
Reply:I would go Thermal dragster 85 ( I think but 85 may only be close ) or a miller maxstar 150.  The maxstar can be had with HF for tig if you so desire.  The Thermal is probably the least expensive of the name bramd welders.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill
Reply:i'd go with the v160t my self ,thats because  i got one and it's a good machine so fareChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:I got a used TA 135 (no longer a current model) that will operate on 120v or 240v.  It burns 3/32" e6013 without any problems on 120v.  It also has hot start, and can be set for lift-arc TIG and a foot or torch control can be added.  The thing is tiny and has a shoulder strap.  They show up on ebay and go for between $250 and $300.  The guts come from the East, but they seem well made and supported.  I have it on good authority that red, blue (and his grey cousin), and yellow all import inverter guts and connectors from northern red-white-green, and black-red-yellow.  For tackin', they're all good!cricman
Reply:I got to go play with another forum members' TA pro-wave 300, on Fri.,and I think I'm sold on the TA line............. I'll get me a Dragster, and try it out.............. Good reviews, so far.And THEN,.............. A  TA pro-wave 300, is gonna be on my Father's day. B-day, X-mas list!!!!!......  Awesome little inverter! These macines will round out the selection, at my shop:Lincoln PM 300 w/ spool gunLincoln Invertech V350pro Advanced process,Lincoln Squarewave 175 Tig,LN-25Miller Bobcat 225NT,Millermatic 250 w/ spool gunEsab 1125 70 amp plasmaTo get...........TA dragster 85TA pro wave 300Lincoln Vantage 400 That should round out the shop, nicely! We need to protect Freedom of Speech, otherwise, how would we know who the A-holes (like me) are.
Reply:After looking at the blasted thing, I realised that I have a P-wee 130S, not a 135!  Gosh, I hope I pay closer attention to my welds, than I do to the label on the welder!cricman
Reply:I have used both the Thermal Arc Dragster 80 and the HF machine. If the price was the same, they would be EVEN. The HF is cheaper and therefore a better machine.I haven't got any pics up yet from the HF machine but hope to soon. Here are the ones from the Dragster 80. http://www.weldinginspectionsvcs.com/Dragster80Pics.htmHave a nice dayhttp://www.weldingdata.com/
