Weld on a spring

New to this forum with a question.Has anyone welded on a torsion spring? It's a 5/16 diameter wire spring? How about any spring and what results on the spring.Did it work or did it break?
Reply:You can weld it but it wont ever be a spring again.Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:I told them it will probably break, but the alternative was not much more attractive to them, so I gave no warranty on the labor and this is how it looked after putting the two halves back together with oxyacetylene. Reply:It needs to be replaced. By heating it to weld you have changed the temper.Springs are hardened (Heated to non-magnetic and quenched) and then Tempered by reheating at a lower temperature. Springs are tempered at approximately 350-375 degrees. any time you heat past 350-375 degrees you ruin the piece.It may not break but it will not perform.This is a VERY generic explanation but it covers the basics of why welding a spring will always ruin it.
