I love to look at other people's projects to get ideas. I have not found any about storing steel. I weld in my garage, so space is a premium. I came up with this design about a year ago and this week built a heavier version with scrapyard steel ($.30/lb). I use 4 1/2" heavy cardboard tubes, but you could use 4" PVC pipe. It is designed so that the tubes are tightly locked together. It is amazingly sturdy and holds a lot of inventory! Because I can sort the various shapes, it is easy to use and easy to see what I need to buy. Reply:It looks like you figured out a way of making the most out of your space.I have stacks of leftover stuff in the yard, and I have to just about go thru every piece to find what I want. I wish I had a rack system.I think the cardboard tubes are a neat idea. It allows you to store shorter pieces without having to make a rack with a bunch of crossmembers."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Nice Rack! ...er, I mean Nice Storage Solution! Very Simple, Very Effective, and Very Low Cost! I will incorporate something of this design for shorter cutoffs. You can see pics of my current system here: http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...=Material+Rack-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:I should have pointed out that this rack holds 10' lengths and cutoffs. I cut most of my 20' stock in half and it fits in the horizontal tubes. As the lengths get cut up, I put them in the shorter vertical tubes. It makes it easy to find and use the shorter pieces first. I looked at Mondo's rack system and it is well built! I think Mondo spent a lot more time and money on his than I did. Just an idea for a small shop or home garage if you can use it.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com

Reply:Hi, great idea using the cardboard tubes. I was doing a job at a golf course and my timing was right. They were throwing out old golf bags,; some were used to haul the range balls . They gave me them for free !! They were a variety of lengths. So i used them for short steel storage. My personal one is short and says TITLEST on it. I should probably sell it on e-bay.I do not golf so they are real no big deal. I don't know what tiger woods would say about it |
