Hi, I have a question, how to make spiral with steel tube ??It's to build a special wood/coal furnace like this one : Water flows through the hose and is then heated water is sent to radiators in other parts of the house. My trouble is to make the heat recovery.Someone have an idea ??( sorry for my english, I speak French... )
Reply:A tube coiling machine.  A roll bender may also work.
Reply:Depending on the type of steel and its wall thickness which determines its stiffness, it may be possible to use a torch to carefully heat the tube and bend it by hand around a mandrel held in a vise and then around itself. The difficult part can be knowing where to apply the heat so that the wall does not collapse. If you do decide use some machine to cold bend it, it may help to fill the tube with lead or even wet sand to prevent the tube from crushing.

Reply:This is usually done on a large, heavy, expensive machine.Usually they are called "pipe rolls" or "section rolls".Not really a home project. Here is a link to a euro supplier of a machine that will do this.http://www.bprcurvatrici.com/It should have a French language version. Here is another-http://www.machine-outil.com/produit.php?which=261The same machine rolls coils or spirals, its quite easy to make spirals with one of these, by just pulling the coil apart a bit as it rolls, or, you can buy an added component that does it accurately and automatically. Its usually not practical to buy a machine like this to roll only one spiral- they cost $5000  and up. It would be better to find someone who already has one, and pay them to make you one.Are you in Quebec, or in Europe? There are shops in both places that have these machines, and will do this for you- its easy enough to call the manufacturers, and ask who in your area owns a machine.
Reply:Thx for answer Ries, in fact I live in Belgium and I already look to find someone to roll those for me, but I don't find anybody.
Reply:In that case, here are a couple more euro suppliers of the machinery- email them and ask for local shops that own their machineshttp://www.tauringroup.com/fra/tauring/index.phpTauring, in French, no less. They make a truly amazing machine, called the Slalom, that I have seen in action, and it doesnt look like it should work, but it does- fully cnc, can bend pipe and tube into amazing shapes.http://www.comac-italy.com/francese/index.htmlIn french, I believe this is called a Cintreuse, and I am sure they exist in Belgium. If only I had a good excuse, or someone paying my way, I would come to belgium and find a company for you- I love belgium. My wife did a project a few years ago with Bekaart, and we got to visit several of their factories, and I had a very enjoyable time in Belgium, drinking lots of gueze, eating moules and frites, and seeing some very creative Belgian art, fashion, and architecture. I am a particular fan of Panamarenko, in Antwerp.http://www.panamarenko.org/home.phpA truly inspired metalworker.
