"walking the cup" on Discovery Channel

I have seen the videos on the web of the "walking the cup" examples and have used the technique some messing around. Recently there was a episode of Extreme Engineering about some LNG refinery in Russia that took a tour of the facility. They showed some video of the pipe fitters welding 12" and larger Stainless tubing. Well the speed at which they were weaving was insane. The torch was oscillating back and forth so fast it didn't look like anything was even getting done but the weld was perfect.  Is it normal for the "weaving" to be so fast?Millermatic 251Century 180 migSpectrum 625 Syncrowave 250DX

Reply:Actually, most of us, myself included, can't seem to weld fast enough to match the speed one can achieve with tig. Most of us are plenty fast with mig, or stick. But true top notch tig is fairly fast. I am nowhere near as fast as I should be. But then again, I only tig for ???2-3hrs a week, out of 15 hrs welding, with a full 40 hrs on costruction projects every week. I have a guy who can wels about 70% as fast as I can with tig, while I mig. He is much better at tig than I am. He sucks at mig, but he is such a fast learner, it is amazing!
