I recently got invited to a interview at DuPont plant here in WV for a general mechanic position after taking a series of skills tests. Word is you make it to the interview it's almost guaranteed your offered a job, but who knows. The question is what would the attire be for a interview like this? I'm thinking a professional look like dress pants and button up. Im only 24 so this would be a huge opportunity for me since ironworking has been hit and miss this year. Thanks in advance.Journeyman Ironworker Local 301Miller maxstar 150sHobart Handler 187
Reply:I have the opportunity to interview new hires entering the maintenance field quite often, I would suggest dress pants, dress shirt, tie and sport jacket at the least. Competition is currently fierce and your personnel appearance is your first impression even before you say a word. Also don't forget to send a short thank you note or email a day or two after the interview, that extra effort is often the clincher. Good Luck!
Reply:Thanks alot. I kinda was leaning that way just didn't know if it was possible to over dress for a job that requires you to get dirty everyday. But i think that first impression is everything.Journeyman Ironworker Local 301Miller maxstar 150sHobart Handler 187
Reply:My brother - it is almost impossible to overdress. Before I was an ironworker, my daily attire was semi formal. khakis, dress shirt and tie and good shoes fit into just about any scenario. The suggestion for a sports coat is a good one. good luck from IW 24!Weldanpower 225 G7Ironworkers Local #24
Reply:I'm in to ask questions on new hires before the final ya or na is given. Don't overdress. Casaul dress slacks, shirt, and tie. We personally find it funny to see a guy applying for a welder/mechanic position and dressing like he is applying for the company CEO.BUT, given the firm your applying with though, you better dress to the nines. Interviewer is probably an educated man with corporate mindset and follows those standards that are set for him in that kind of environment.Good Luck with your interview.
Reply:Thanks I really appreciate the advice. Hopefully all goes well. Being a Ironworker is fun but hard to deal with when the jobs are few and far between or 500miles from home.Journeyman Ironworker Local 301Miller maxstar 150sHobart Handler 187
Reply:dress well. the last job i had was a mechanic on trucks and equipment. when i interviewed i was dressed in shirt and tie. the guy they interviewed before me walked out of the office in greasy coveralls. the boss told me he hired me even thow i was more money because of my attire. said i looked profesional. then he went on to rag me about looking like i was interviewing for the accountant position.
Reply:Remember...DuPont is all about safety first. So your answers to any questions along those lines need to reflect a stellar safety attitude...by the book all the way...no short cuts, no half way. Good Luck, and let us know how it goes!
Reply:All good advice here. I have hired lots of guys for years. First impression is the most important. Take advantage of the opportunity. Introduce youself to the the interviewer(s) with a firm handshake. If there is more than 1 interviewer make sure to make good eye contact with all of them as they ask questions. Say sir or maam, please & thank you as approprate. Have any required papers such as certifications, evaluations, references, drivers license records or DD214 if required. This is your best opportunity to sell yourself. Remember to thank them for their time and send a thank you letter afterwards. Good luck |
