Hi, I'm starting welding classes at a trade school in about a month. After I get a couple years experience I want to start my own 1 man business. What are some areas to specialize in?
Reply:Aluminum, stainless, foodgrade stainless (thats what I do). Or start making crap and selling it, alot of companies you go work for it started as some guy started making a product in his garage.Lincoln Ranger 250 GXTLN-25Lincoln Magnum SG and ModuleAirco HF BoxMiller 304 XMT CC/CVMiller 60 Series FeederMiller Syncrowave 250O/A SetupIt's a dog eat dog world and i'm wearing milkbone underwear
Reply:Pipeline welding, process piping in power plants, structural steel, heavy equipment repair, tank construction, aerospace fabrication, shipyard work, robotics, orbital TIG welding(which crosses a couple of different industries), and the ever-popular 'underwater welding'.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Depends on the build. Some custom build there is money in.I believe it was Duallie who made a great point on a topic last year about this. He hit the nail on the head, If you are going to do equipment you better know the piece of equipment in and out.  Whether it is machinery or millwright type or work.  You work on it it becomes your baby, I do a lot of equipment welding, like others here, a lot of times there is more than meets the eye.  You have to know what you are doing.  When you take on a repair job you are expected to fix it, the first time.  You put your reputation on the line every time you do a repair job.  As Duallie posted, you are going to get dirty, you are going to wreck some of your stuff and you can't always recover the cost of it, and you are going to be welding and wrenching in some precarious spots. If you don't have 10 years or so of experience with equipment stay away from it.  Just my opinion.TB 302 EFIESAB Migmaster 275MM 211 w/Spoolmate 100Hypertherm PlasmaMetal Master, Victor, and Smith TorchesUnihydro 45Wells BandsawArcair K2000Weldcraft Tig rigMiller 12VSLincoln PT 225No one can say I'm brand biased.

Reply:ya, get it working for someone or actually spending time in the equipment.Feet in the fire can be a one way track to going broke when it comes to equipment work. It is the world we live in unfortunately.Sometimes you do gotta go for it though I guess.TB 302 EFIESAB Migmaster 275MM 211 w/Spoolmate 100Hypertherm PlasmaMetal Master, Victor, and Smith TorchesUnihydro 45Wells BandsawArcair K2000Weldcraft Tig rigMiller 12VSLincoln PT 225No one can say I'm brand biased.
