I have a car part that has a flange that is Stainless Steel - not entirely sure what # stainless.  The pipe if needs to be welded on is mild steel - how should I go about TIG'ing this?  What filler rod should I use since I am trying to weld stainless to mild?
Reply:Use stainless 309 filler.
Reply:thanks and that'll fuse with the mild?  Can someone recommend a place to order 309 filler for a decent price?Last edited by Jon K; 07-07-2006 at 06:30 AM.

Reply:Silly question but there is no possible way to adhere stainless steel to aluminum is there?
Reply:Screws, bolts or maybe some sort of resin.  Talk to cosmicsparks, he has an idea for welding wood to steel surely it'd weld ss to aluminum   who knows everyone said the history's geniuses were crazy.Last edited by littlefuzz; 07-07-2006 at 06:50 PM.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:also use 310 ,if it's handy . but , it might be higher priced .[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:only way to weld aluminum to SS is by inertia welding (also called friction welding)I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:how about 308L  ?that's all I stock,  and I do this occasionally myself.  IS 308L much worse for mild-to-stainless application?
Reply:The reason that 309, 310, or 312 are recommended for dissimilar metal welding such as 304 to low carbon steel, is that the dilution of the two base metals with the filler metal in the weld results in a weld chemistry that solidifies as primarily austenite which is a ductile and tough microstructure.  The reason that 308 should not be used for stainless to carbon steel dissimilar metal welding is that it will result in a weld metal chemistry that forms martensite upon solidification.  Likewise an autogeneous weld (weld without filler) between 304 and carbon steel is also not recommended.  Martensite a the hard brittle microstructure and in the untempered form will very likely crack and fail.  Tempered martensite, formed by reheating the hardened steel, is a slightly softer and tougher, usable form of martensite that all hardened tool steels, knives, etc. are composed of.The following link discusses this subject a bit but does not go into the actual calculation and prediction of weld metal chemistry and martensite formation.  http://www.esabna.com/EUWeb/AWTC/Lesson5_18.htmAs discussed in the next article, it is possible to estimate the % dilution from the base metals and the contribution from wire, calculate the weld metal chemisty, and plot this on the Welding Research Council (WRC) diagram to predict % martensite formation.  http://aws.org/w/s/wj/2005/05/014/index.html
Reply:What if it's not a 300 series stainless steel? what if it is a ferritic, martensitic, or a percipitation hardening or duplex type??? I would try to find out what type of stainless I'm dealing with before making the assumption if you get my drift!!!   Ever hear of Fronius's Cold Metal Transfer method of welding mild steel to Aluminum??? It may not be the most optimal method but it does serve it's intended purpose of welding zinc coated steels to aluminum/magnesium alloys for automotive applications...  Respectfully,SSBN727Last edited by SSBN727; 07-14-2006 at 04:40 AM."Run Silent...  Run Deep!!!
Reply:You'll note that Fronius refers to the Cold Metal transfer as a method of "intrinsically joining" steel to aluminum.  They're very careful never to call it welding.I r 2 a perfessional

Reply:My 309 sticks came... i ordered 3/16 by mistake I think... they seem kind of...fat.  Is this ok?
