I searched the board trying to understand the differences and couldn't find all of the pieces so here's the questions.I see Victor and Harris as two really good manufactureres of O/A torches.  Are they compatible or if you buy one you have to buy their tips and accessories or should I care.  I got the impression the Harris stuff is harder to find. The other question since I am planning on using it mostly for cutting is there any merit to the Gasoline/Oxygen cutting torches that I see on the internet.  There are a couple of manufacturers but they claim the G/O units oxidize better and you don't get the dripping steel that fills back in when cutting larger stuff.  Here is a link to one of them.   http://www.petrogen.com/ Is this option for real or does it fall into the same category as those worthless aluminum rods that everyone buys to repair coke cans.My local Welding Supply only carries the Victor equipment.Michael
Reply:I like Harris but in most cases the places I work at use Victor.  Your choice of Victor would be a good one in terms of parts and service.  I worked with a guy who used a gas torch in the field.  He said it worked fine the first time they used it.  A few months later they took it out of the tool shack and had nothing but trouble.  They stopped using it.  If you are cutting and want an alternate fuel to acetylene there are better choices.  I still feel nervous about using a line pressurized with a liquid fuel.  At least with a gaseous fuel it "goes away" quickly.
Reply:Myself, I believe the G/O to be mostly hype as applied the average user. They had a big write up on Hobart about it a few years ago...it wasn't positive as I recall. They seem better for ones like scrappers and those that use an ungodly amount of O/A on huge cuts. As to the Harris and Victor, you can't mix and match....UNLESS>>>>> you get the "V" series Harris cutting torches. They use Victor tips. I almost got one, but got the regular Harris instead. Turns out my LWS has tons of Harris tips and will always have them, barring some unforseen occourance. Now, if the brown truck would kindly bring me my torch, I will try it out. You can always find the Harris tips on Epay. Always a lot there.
