so I have a lincoln sp(something rather) whatever the small 120 mig they have is. Anyway I havent really used it much since I got a stick so I pull it out the other day and the wire is comming out in bursts. Its not the motor or the tension so Im guessing since it was stored in a shed the humidity may have gotten to it and maybe rusted the sleeve inside the hose? The wire comming out looks clean though, but either way it seems like I need to clean the hose out. What is this done with? Would oil be ok or would leftover oil residue contaminate the weld?Any advice would be greatthanks
Reply:Check to see if your wire is rusty/tarnished.  Old wire will do that...old fluxcore will get a grey film on it.  This can cause what you are talking about also.  Make sure the wire is smooth and has no crusty spots on it.Removing the spring liner is pretty easy.  If it's rusted, it probably should be replaced.  If not, it could be some obstruction or buildup that can be blown out with an air hose.  However, if you are sure it's not in the cabinet (power source), I'd check the contact tip first, at the gun.  Take it off and see if the wire flows more easily.  Torch tip cleaners are good to clean out contact tips....or, just buy a box of new ones. Also, make sure you don't have any hard bends in your liner while you have the trigger down.  Keep the liner as straight as possible.  This is good general practice that will increase the life of all your feeder components.Last edited by smithboy; 08-04-2006 at 09:16 AM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Smithboy has some very good tips....also check the feed tube for the wire. I have a couple of these machines and have found that the feed tubes (on either side of the drive roll) tend to fill up with crap and cause the wire to feed erratically. If you take the wire out of the feed tube, cut a couple inches off the end of the spool and feed it by hand into the tubes, you will probably find a tremendous buildup of gook inside the tubes. Clean that out with the short piece of wire and hopefully it will help.Paulhttp://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:I'll definitely reiterate what's been said.  If you are certain you have a good tip and the tension is set correctly, then you should probably go through the whole wire feeder and clean it up.  Check the drive rolls and the feed tubes to make sure they are clean and free of corrosion.  The gun liner can be blown out with an air compressor.  It should be noted that the liner is considered a consumable item, so it's not completely incongruous to have to replace them occasionally.-Heath
