I have been meaning to ask this for a while. When refering to structural work, what is a "dog"? I am guessing it is a hunk of flat stock with a hole in it to lift a beam.?.?.? Or like the four lifting points on my skid. Just a guess, I really don't have any other clue."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:nope it is used with a wedge ie. to dog and wedge something in to place Think of the handles on the hatch on a ship wedge and dog system
Reply:Down here we refer to it as a dog and wedge. We make the dog out of flat bar in a L shape. When trying to get 2 pieces of material to line up, tack the dog to the low side and drive the wedge in to raise the low side to lower the high side. Hope this makes sense. Maybe someone could draw one and post it. I'm still trying to figure out sketch-up, or I would.

Reply:Hello Stickman, in my neck of the woods the term "dog" is actually associated with another term: wedge and dog. Here is an example of it and how it is used. Best regards, Allan Attached Imagesaevald
Reply:Dog is one of those funny bent metal rods that fit in a square hole on a Platen table that you can beat the bajeebers out of to hold metal fixtures in place.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:The ones we used were like FB said but we had flange stud nuts welded to them so we could turn the stud into the high side to push it even. Those are lift lugs on your welding cart.Leo

Reply:Then there is the "Hickey bar"...................also used to align parts.
Reply:Here's another item that could be of interest for those who are looking for alternatives to help with fitting challenges. Hopefully the link will post here OK.       http://www.fitupgear.com/videos.htmlBest regards. Allanaevald
Reply:It is a tool used for positioning or holding work. Here are some screw dogs.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Ask a structural ironworker to "dog" something in, or to make up a dog, you will get what the others have said about the wedge and dog. Can be used to align two pieces of giant heavy (6x8x3/4 20 foot sticks) angle, bring something up to elevation, or to draw two pieces for a tight fit to weld. I used some yesterday to reverse a 2 and a half in bow in a filler beam, to fit in an access frame.Weldanpower 225 G7Ironworkers Local #24

Reply:example of what I used today. First pic is to drive the left plate down to same elevation as the plate on the right.second pic is a get up to draw the piece marker 4403A up to the bent plate above it. I actually put in a second dog after this to drive it in to be flush. Hard to do miscellaneous and detail steel without a couple bullpins, some dogs and a beater. Reply:DOG...As in "dog" down those hatches. From the internet. In engineering a dog is a tool that prevents movement or imparts movement by offering physical obstruction or engagement of some kind. It may hold another object in place by blocking it, clamping it, or otherwise obstructing its movement. Or it may couple various parts together so that they move in unison - the primary example of this being a flexible drive to mate two shafts in order to transmit torque. This word usage is a metaphor derived from the idea of a dog (animal) biting and holding on.See what I mean?It can take on different forms. "Bite down like a dog"OR....".Three dog night" Austrailian term for a cold night would reguire three dogs sleeping with you in a shallow hole in the ground. But it could be tighten all three dogs on the hatches."So and so has been "dog'n me all day and won't get off my back." Get the idea?Last edited by Donald Branscom; 05-05-2011 at 01:37 PM.Reason: spellingAWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Then there are bench dogs that you use to hold something down to a workbench while you work on it. The one on the left below is an example. It works by being under tension (it gets bent when you beat it down) and friction and that's what both holds it in the bench (the shaft bears against the side of the hole in the bench) and holds down the workpiece (because the top part gets bent like a spring).
