Reply:we use Welding Technology Fundamentals (by bowditch) along with Printreading for Welders at our school. they are very good beginner books with easy to understand explanations. the Procedure Handbook is hard to read and understand when starting out, but after you've been at it a while it's a must have. do a search online and you will find all kinds, matter of fact, we have some used text books that students have left over the years if you're interested in a used text book.johnjohnwelding instructorwww.williamrmoore.orgMooreTech College of Technologywelder/fabricatorJGWilson, Inc.www.jgwilson.com

Reply:If you're near a local library, stop and see what they have, and take a few home to read. I've seen a lot of welding books, and none of them have been 'bad'. The oldest books  concentrate on OA because stick welding was still new than. Those might even mention blacksmithing or thermite welding, both of which are useful to understand too. Some new ones may mention laser welding or cutting, which are great but hard to do in the average suburban garage.
Reply:I bought the HTP TIG welding DVD a few weeks ago; not a bad DVD, IMHO.  I got it off Ebay for about $30, as I recall...Chris
Reply:Welding: Principles and Applications.  Nice book, covers all the basics, and is a very common classroom textbook.
