So here is what i would like to make for my first project Just the star.Im a sheet metal worker, and by the question im about to ask its obvious that im a 1st year aprentice. but how would i figure out the dimensions of the triangles to get the top angels at about a 45 or so.
Reply:get the one in the picture hammer it flat and trace it on some metal ..there you go just kidding, i dont know ?
Reply:I am not 100% sure this is the way to do this. Figure how wide you wnat the star to be. Say 2 ft. Get some poster card and draw a line 12' long. Looking left to right take the left side and draw a line at 55 degrees to what every lenght you want the center point of star to be like 4 inches high and connect the end to right end of 12 ' line. Then do same on other side of the 12' line. Fold in half on 12' line. make 4 copies and tape together to see if that the look you want. Then trace out on your metal and cut 5 each and fold and weld together. I have one to make my self and thats how I am going to do it when I get the time for this projects.
Reply:thank you, let me know how that works out... i wish i could find a formula for it but i think i need at lead one degreeLast edited by Narcolepticpug; 10-28-2008 at 11:14 PM.
Reply:OK maybe this will help someone help me moreall degrees are unknown
Reply:Oh man, I sorta remember that stuff from highschool geometry. Unequal leg triangle (isoscoles?). It might pay to look at some old math books. When you're sittin' there gazin' out the window at 15yrs. old, wishin' to get the H outta class, you never figured you'd need this stuff one day"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:do a search for "obtuse triangle" and you should find your answer.
Reply:i thought it was Oblique Triangle? and i think this is Trigonometry... which i never got to.. all i needed to know to get in the union was 8th grade math...and i cant remember but im pretty sure i need at least one degree to find the missing side or the hight Last edited by Narcolepticpug; 10-29-2008 at 12:24 AM.

Reply:Well, one angle is >90 and the other two are 90 and the other two are <90, so it's obtuse.
Reply:Since angle A-C is unknown and length B is also unknown it's impossible to calculate any further.Think about it: A and C could be placed at any angle, and B would simply adjust to any length needed to close the triangle. To find B's length, would require at least one known angle.
Reply:yea, true. its just bugging me, cuz i know that there has to be some sort of needlessly complicated solution to figuring out how to cut my shapes from looking at the picture.

Reply:Forget that steel plate has thickness - Are all the triangles the same? Will the points of your star be equally spaced?

Reply:good luck with the project
Reply:This is great...because we've seen this star on so many barns and rural houses and would really like to know what it is there for. Help, please don't let me die ignorant! Holger
Reply:Hey im a local sheetmetal worker to . Which now im not working because of a laid us of and 300 guys at the hall so on the other hand . If you are not shure ask the shop teacher at youre hall he can show you how to come up with the angles but remember try to make it out of carboard it is cheaper then metal later

Reply:I believe that the symbol is meant to protect the building and its occupants from evil. www.anglefire.com-The Meaning of a PentagramI'm no good at creating links, so you actually have to type the search, and type exactly what I have on the line above then hit search. Reply:There are a few geometry puzzles going on here. You need to know a few factors first.Radius of the circle. The depth of the star (The distance it stands out from the wall or barn)The over all taper of each point (skinny/fat)The biggest problem you have is that the compound angles where each leg of the star joins the others in the center. It's possible to draw it up pretty fast in Autocad and get some pretty precise angles and measurements.Lo-fi method is the cardbord template.Belargehair__________________________Lincoln AC225 GLMHammers"I might be an adult, but I'm a minor at heart."
Reply:I came up with this after about 5 minutes in Sketchup. I think it's about the easiest way of determining the dimensions, any of them can be changed really easily. If you would like just let me know and I can do the same to your specs. -Cory
Reply:Nice sketch.I'll have to check out that software. I usually operate in autocad and dabbled in Inventor.(But, I still prefer pencil and paper!)Belargehair__________________________Lincoln AC225 GLMHammers"I might be an adult, but I'm a minor at heart."

But otherwise, when the memory of two world wars was still fresh in many minds, you probably wouldn't have dared to display the star; If not out of love for your country, then probably out fear for your well-being. Remember, the red star was a most recognizable symbol of communism.Someone probably started this fad after they pried a red star off the old Texaco station. Good Luck |
