Reply:Great job, and a hard job. Everything had to line up right to make it work. The prime example why you couldn't giveme Deere hay equipment. Hesston is the only co. that makes it right.Forget disc mowers, and stick with sickle mowers, if you want reliability. A little slower, but it stays in the field all day long, every day. Disc mowers fly, but when they break, might as well call a custom cutter to finish your field. Get a really good bank loan while yer at it.Signed: Technologically Challenged Old Fart"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:i learned one important fact with a sickle mower. it was a new holland conditioner. i had just about finished cutting the field and i had a small strip about a foot wide. hit the lever, dropped the deck down and went to cutting. looked back and what did i see. one heck of a wad getting ready to go through the rollers. umm too late. took me 2 hours to unclog that sucker. learned real quick if ya got a strip you cut it high.
Reply:whats wrong with a disc mower sam? i was brought up on a a model jd pulling a no. 5 mower, then 65 mf with a jd no 9 mower, and now 6080 ac with a sm 320 fella mower. yeah the disc mower is more expensive to repair but you sure can make tracks. don't have to wait for the dew to get off of the grass and does not matter if the wind and rain beat down the tall fescue. just be careful in new fields and just remember where all the junk is in the old fields.i'll never go bck to the sickle mower trugging through the field in low range, pull forward, back up, pull forward, back up. was mowing with the ih 354 and no 9 several years ago and a low hanging pine branch hung in the throttle linkage, pulled it wide open and hung it there. sickle bar clogged, broke open and swung back, broke the pitman stick which stuck in the ground and bent the bottom shaft. that was a sweet little mower. i had it set up right, sharpen the sections and could almost keep up with my buddies duetz allis 6275 and ni 5408. never had any other sickle mower do that, even the same model.G3Last edited by G3farms; 11-03-2008 at 09:17 PM.miller... 225g, s32p, 250x, 304, 12vs, MSW41 victor o/a thermal dynamics cutmaster 50 lenco panel spotter hobart hf-boxG3 Farms.....raising cattle, hay, kids and hell, ...oh yeah I'm a fire sprinkler contractor by trade.
Reply:Number one reason we retired the sickle mower , FIRE ANTS. Cut five feet, unclog, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat. A little hard-surfacing on the discs will save the drama of having to replace them one day.A top notch repair job, wish we had some help at work that was that good. Good help is HARD to find.Ranger 250 GXTSmith Gas Axe
