This plate is made from mild steel and has a stainless plate welded to it. All told, about six inches thick. It is from something at a paper mill that apparently broke yesterday morning. We found out about it at 7:00 P.M. Thursday night. The stainless side of the plate has been machined clean and we need to add about 5/8" to it. The part arrived at our shop at around 8 A.M. today. We got the green light to start welding at around 11:30 after the engineers from their company measured everything. Knowing that this was a rush job that would be worked on until it was done I volunteered to go first to get my hours out of the way.We set it up on a pair of driven rollers, and made a rest to lean on while yer dumpin the wire.FCAW SS 316 1/16" wire, CO2. I finally got all squared away and started burnin at noon.Ten hours and two 33Lb spools later, I got relieved and sent home, man that was nuts! That is alot of wire. Each layer has 30 passes. I only had my phone today so here is a picture from above, it almost looks like the rings on a tree. Ok I'm going to bed now. Attached ImagesYup
Reply:Well ... that was a job indeed.  Did ya get dizzy with all the circles and circles and circlesI could never make it out of the parking lot... I'd be driving in circles weld it like you own it
Reply:Air cooled gun or water cooled? What machine was running for 10hours? Reply:Will the padding then be machined to original dimensions?"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Hello Guys,                 Nice job,Good little earner. bet you were seeing weld beads in your sleep, I'v been on jobs similar to this but they had stainless replaceable wearing plates held on by big countersunk allen screws. Gordon.

Reply:You win. I quit!!!!Holy smokes, that is a LOT of weld. And, it looks good, very tight passes. I bet you were glad to see that one leave the shop! And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:That is a lot of wire. Don’t think I could survive for 10 hrs. with a hand held torch. Good thing you had only one of them to do. I had a similar job this summer, however it was an A105 forged steel ring, 7” thick  42” i.d. x 55” o.d. and 1500 lbs. It had two V grooves just over 1” deep. I had the ring set up on a welding positioner and used two rigged up torch holders to hold two 400 amp air cooled Lincoln magnum guns. Pushed the wire with two Lincoln Power Mig 350MP’s. set at 450 WS using 27 volts. Ran a pass in each groove simultaneously. One rev. took 10 to 11 minuets. Each ring required two 33 lb. spools of cored .045” outershield. Took me 7 hours to weld one using two machines. Did 50 pieces. Anyhow I was wondering if you had to preheat the plate prior to welding and if you started/placed your weld in any special order. Thanks
Reply:Ok couple of questions.I have never seen a 33# spool of 1/16 wire 60# yes 44# i thinks so and we always use a tri mix gas with stainless wire. The splatter with co2 is bad.Just asking not trying to start any crap.ThanksTimMiller 330 A/BP Bernard SS coolerMiller cst 250Miller Big Blue 251DCentury 210 Mig (first welder I bought)Hypertherm PowerMax 800Victor torch setRu Fong 31 MilAtlas lathe
Reply:I ran though a few spools of 316-16 s.s. dualshield and never had an issue with splatter, running on co2.  The stuff is kinda fun to run as long as you dont get too greedy with your weld size, or you'll run into slag incursions from the metal rolling over it's self.  I dont remember what the spool weights where.  but I do remember them being in the 600 dollar range.. But that was 3 years ago before metal prices went though the roof.  Those type of welds put me in lala land.. My a.d.d. kicks in and the next thing you know, I'm grinding out my mistakes. -MikeCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:worked at a power plant where we were replacing the stainless steel sheets in the coal bunkers. one of the welders who was welding the long seams put a toggle switch onto the side of his mig gun. ran the wires into the handle. just flicked the switch and went to welding. didn't have to squeeze the trigger all day long.
Reply:Some feeders have that option built-in ,,,   I had a Miller 12vs Extreme, just had to flip the switch, gun trigger acted like a toggle, press once, you were running,,,,   press again, it stopped.

Reply:SorryI was thinking of soild wire. We use dual sheild and use 75 / 25 mix. We have never had any good results with co2 straight.Miller 330 A/BP Bernard SS coolerMiller cst 250Miller Big Blue 251DCentury 210 Mig (first welder I bought)Hypertherm PowerMax 800Victor torch setRu Fong 31 MilAtlas lathe

Reply:That sure is a lot of weld metal to lay down.  Very nice. What brand was the wire?
Reply:That is a lot of hexavalent chromium in the air... respirators??
Reply:How long can a spool of mig wire last in a machine before it goes bad? Thanks for your help   Terry
