Before I even plug my new shiny beast in, does anyone have experience with this machine?.I got both guns for it .. (Standard for mild / stainless / general use), and the XR™-Aluma-Pro™ Gun I feel I may have gotten a steal at 4200.00 for the entire works, used twice (Aluminum push pull has never been used).Base Model Starting at:    $4,828.00Then the XR gun alone is worth.Base ModelStarting at:$ 1,816.00Anyone used these?Found any limits?
Reply:I didn't end up getting one due to the cost, but I asked around quite a bit about one and the folks I talked to would agree that you have a good machine there......and a steal is right! I was comparing it with the Lincoln 350MP when I was looking and while the red model had more features I understand the blue may be a little more user friendly when it comes to settings. I'm waiting on the brown truck to show up with the XR control and XR push pull gun I just scored off ebay, I'm gonna try and make it work with my Powcon 400SM. Wish I had the pulse feature since I hear it makes aluminum easier to weld, but by the time I get comfortable enough with welding to take on the project I have in mind, I'll hopefully have enough money saved up to put into some more equipment. What's your plans for the new toy?Powcon 400SM2-PD60 wire feedersMiller XR controlAlumapro push/pull gunSpeedglas 9100xBFH
Reply:Lots of custom marine, stainless / aluminum work, plus some mild steel work doing trailers and what not.. multipiece stuff too. I've two trades Welder and Fabricator. Have years of education expenses to recoup so wanted a no worry machine to do it. I like the 12" roll factor of this little bugger. I also like to think that I'll get my push pull into odd corners that my spool gun may not. I'll let you know how she hums. May make a youtube vid. We'll see.
Reply:I'd like to see some video when you get it up and running and have a camera handy! What got me interested in welding in the first place, and what I'm working towards being able to do, is being able to weld aluminum so I can build my own small boat for duck hunting and fishing. Most of what I'd be welding would be .125" 5086, of which I have exactly zero experience with. I don't know that "I" will be able to do it with my current set up, but I haven't talked myself out of "needing" a pulse machine to help my welding handicap.Powcon 400SM2-PD60 wire feedersMiller XR controlAlumapro push/pull gunSpeedglas 9100xBFH
Reply:Avid duck hunter myself, or was at least until I found no time to do so, and decided I like Salmon fishing just as much. One day when my blueprints are drawn, and I have the 60k for materials I'll probably build myself a 30 foot aluminum cabin cruiser. Once I have enough money for a big press brake, and set of rolls that is.Could be never but who knows lol.Last edited by WelderBC; 05-18-2011 at 01:45 AM.
Reply:My project isn't quite that ambitious, but I like how you think! I'm leaning more towards a 18' x 54"ish jon boat. I haven't figured out yet if I wan't to go full flat bottom with a pointed bow to make it better in the shallow or a semi v bow to settle the chop when I'm on bigger water. When the time comes to buy materials I'll be traveling south to Louisiana since thats the closest place to get big sheets of marine grade aluminum from here and some of the suppliers are set up to cut and brake it on site. I figure I'll have them brake the sides if I end up going the one peice route while I'm down there. I'd either have the stringers bent there or someplace local if I don't have a means of doing it myself by then. My whole thing in wanting to build my own boat is being able to say I built it myself, good, bad or indifferent. With what I'll have invested in equipment and materials I probably coulda had two custom boats built. But where's the fun in that? I've very little salmon experience, but I was a rabid steelheader when I lived up in PA. Fished all the tribs off the southeast end of Erie. Wish I was still close enough to do it some more, but I plan to be up there around thanksgiving this year to visit family and will take a few days to rip a few lips I'm sure.Powcon 400SM2-PD60 wire feedersMiller XR controlAlumapro push/pull gunSpeedglas 9100xBFH
Reply:I use one of those at work and it's a beast. I've welded bodymetal up to 3/4"+ plate with it and it'll do anything you ask. I don't know how i lived without the pulse all these years. One caveat tho, we bought two of them and both had to go back for repairs within a month, one with no output and one with gas control probs. You do realize you can access the total welding time and amount of stops/starts thru the control panel. I think it's by holding down the arc control button while powering it up......Mike
