ok so for my new project im going to be making a very fast gokart.im going to put a old 750cc honda motorcycle motor in it   .ok so here is my question.. where can i purches metal tubing/ pipe that will be strong enough so suport my weight and the weight of the motor.  i saw some galv steel piping at home depo today that looked sturdy, it was in the pluming section.. does anyone know if that will be strong enough. i hope so cuz its cheap, only $18 for 10 feet.,If that wont work where can i buy what i needPS. this gokart will be going offroad.
Reply:Chrome Moly tubing is the only way to go for strength/economy.Any decent metal warehouse should have it or be able to get it.  If they can't they aren't with two cents.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Pipe is plenty strong for a single seat go cart as long as your not jumping hills and ramps...but galvanized...damn it welds like crap....if your wire welding you have to grind down to good metal and even then it pops when it gets hot...try and see if they have any black pipe in the sprinkler section...AWS CWI/CWEASNT NDT Level 2 PT/MTAWS Certified Welder(aerospace)

Reply:You might want to check out the plans from this company.  Good plans and reasonable prices.  These guys are really into building safe high speed off road equipment.http://www.edge.au.com/This doesn't answer your steel question, but may help with a safe fast design.  Cut their prices in about half for the US dollar exchange.Bob from Idaho
Reply:one source for 4130 Chrome Moly Tubing is http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/...130tubing.htmlhope this helps
Reply:I'd definitely stay away from galvanized pipe (or black pipe) from Home Depot (or Lowes, etc.) as they are all imported from China.  They are relatively brittle - especially when welded.  We tried some on my sons go-kart (max 27 mph) and would not hold up even on a good gravel road.  Chrom moly is certainly the best choice (stronger and lighter for a given size) but basic mild steel tubing in heavier guages will work.  Mild steel is cheaper, easier to obtain and easy to work with and repair.Last edited by reefera4m; 11-08-2008 at 11:51 PM.
Reply:Racing gokarts usually use 125cc 2 stroke motors (very light) and have 100 mph capability. They're used on paved tracks. They have no suspension.Using a 750cc 4 stroke (heavy) and using it offroad (suspension necessary), will add a lot of complexity. Try Google "racing go karts".9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Miller Syncrowave 250

Reply:just a thought you might what to think about using square tubing its probably a little weaker but its easier to to fit the joints properly unless you have the proper tooling for round and thats were your breaking issues will be. Square tube runs about a dollar a pound at the local steel supplier about 150 pounds should build a decent chassis. that engine is probably close to a 90 horse so you want it built tuff, good luck and have fun
Reply:chrommoly is gonna maximize  things, but with your  horsepower to weight ratio, you wont hurt yourself with sch 40 black steel pipe--get it from a plumbing supply house, not a hd place..
Reply:As stated Chromoly or DOM would be the best but regular schedule 40 black iron pipe will do as well  and you can buy the cheap harbor freight pipe bender to make all your bends. You will need to do some research on frame design no matter work materail yo use. Even a simple Kocart can kill. Check out this wen sites list below. They might be of some help and some sell plans.http://www.ubuilditplans.com/NEWUBUILDITPHOTOS5.htmlhttp://www.badlandbuggy.com/index.htmlhttp://www.gokartsupply.com/gokarts.htmMiller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Personally I would err on the side of safety. At least when you build this you won't have that nagging feeling about it breaking on you. Galv. is a no-no for auto/offroad/Motorcycling/etc.  Go with the Chrom-molly tubing since you are building your ride for off road use. Ya gotta ask yerself this question ... Is it worth your health or life to risk using anything less?
