Ok guys, I have a roughly 3x5 cast iron plate that i was going to use for my table top until i started thinking about, - Will it crack after extending abuse, (its about 5/8 thick with webbing underneith it)- How hard it is going to be to mount to the frame because you can only build a frame that would mount the tabletop flush with the frame, therefore no overhang. Today i found a piece of fairly nice 1 inch thick plate that i can roughly cut a 4 x 6 out of. The guy wanted 200 cash which i thought was fairly reasonable, considering i called out to the local steel yard yesterday and they wanted 532 dollars for a peice of 1/2 inch plate that is 4x8So basically i guess my question is, Should i just ditch the cast iron top and go with something i know is going to hold up and that i can put an overhang on.Nick

Reply:Steel.Cast iron is brittle and really won't take tack welds, if you are the sort to take a piece, jig, or fixture to the table while working. The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:I'd go for the steel. But, in saying that I have an old cast iron spindle moulder table and I have welded on it ok, but of course cannot tack to it. It's a nice flat surface but is difficult to clamp anything to, as like yours it's all webs underneath and usually where you want to clamp is between the webs. I like it as a work surface and it rusts less than steel. I've hammered bearings out on it with no ill effects.Best answer, TWO tables!
