I was wondering if anyone wants to donate some welds on steel, aluminum, or whatever material to have them strength tested. My last lab in class we get to break whatever we want. I figured a nicely welding joint would suffice. Notice I said nicely, thats why im not doing it....It can pretty much be anything, but with a few restrictions. 1. Has to be longer than 12".2. Diameter should be less than 1.5" if its round. Width should be less than 2" if its flat, and maybe no more than .5" thick.Il pay for shipping, as long as you have a paypal account il shoot you over some money. Its gonna be busted on a machine like this, but bigger. Thanks alot, I hope someone will chime in!!Andrew

Reply:Your test rig wouldn't want to look at MY welds.A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug
Reply:Tinious olson niceyeah what do you want. we have a huge tensile machine in our welding lab. --Gol'
Reply:Andrew, where are you located?? A lot of us would like to see a few of their welds assaulted. Some specific welds we really want to see tore up are(My personal wish list) #1.Anodized aluminum vs. non anodized. Same pipe, same weld, no special prep to either piece allowed. #2. SS to mild steel. One piece, 309 ss filler. the 2nd piece, er70s2 or s6 filler. If you're down to recieve the pieces, we can get some together for you, to be sure!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Not to Hi-jack the thread, Rojo, I may be able to oblige you with the SS to A36 tests. We just wrote and tested a procedure for a contractor in Milwaukee that is doing the new sewers.I will see if its back from the lab yet.Yup
Reply:Il test anything, it wont be a full blown test with stress strain curves and what not. I probably just be able to get the ultimate strength of the piece and maybe the yield strength.Id like to see the anodized AL, and the stainless would be cool too. As long as the piece is up to the dimensions i listed before we should be good.I think a steel lap joint would be pretty cool too. Maybe .5" X 2" pieces with a 1" lap? It really doesnt matter, whatever anyone wants to do would be awesome.Im Located in Fall River, MA. Heres the only problem, I need the pieces before Monday December 1st, thats when I will be testing them.Il take some pictures too, so all of you can check it out. Thanks alot, Andrew
Reply:Stringers verses weave? David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Sounds good to me.Thanks
Reply:I believe nature can speak to that. I popped the house of a muddawbber wasp out from the belly of my truck this last weekend and the weave technique clearly displayed proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that nature favors a nice weave! Notice the slag nearly popped off all by itself, a sure sign the bead was good!!City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:Im not going to lie, when I first saw that I thought it was a piece of poo.
Reply:1/2" X 2" X 12". I will see what I can come up with by Friday so I can get it shipped.David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:someone should go revisit zap's little endevor of the fused vs filler added SS pipe.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:How about hardness tests?
Reply:We really havent gotten into hardness. Im pretty sure thatll be in my next materials course. When the time comes, il come around again.Andrew |
