Its kinda white outside, so I have the plow on my truck.  Others are thinking about snow too. This is an aftermarket plow that is going to be pushed by a bobcat.  I don't know what size, but I hope its a big one.I was asked how much and what to use.  The plate is 1/4", so I decided to use 1/4 X 4" flat stock.  The plow has 3/8" , but the plate is only 1/4, so.....I guessed 2 hours for the job.Besides the 1/4" plate plus the 1/4" X 4" I added = 1/2".  I welded the 2 pieces to the plate first on the floor.  I thought I brought a NEW box of 1/8" 7018, but it was 5/32.  Too big for the job.  I also brought some 3/32 7018 H4 right out of the oven.  I needed 1/8" to weld the 1/4" flat stock to the plate, so I found a tube of 1/8" 7014 on the truck for days like these.  I also had some 6013 which I don't really use much.  OK, I almost always use 7018.  I started out with 7014 DCEP at 130 amps.  It worked pretty good.  Then I looked at my cheat sheet and it said DCEN, so I switched and got a better looking bead and wetter puddle.  I then tried switching from smooth to crisp on the welder. It worked better yet except more spatter.  The puddle flowed better and more even , so I left it on crisp. All mill scale and paint were removed prior to welding.I had to take a picture of this.7014 Smooth DCEP 130 give or take amps.  Total 88" of weld7014 DCEN 130 amps Crisp.  You can see the toes are tied in better and the bead is much better looking.  OK, it is to me.  Unit installed  Note welder made by Fischer Price Last edited by David R; 11-20-2008 at 08:05 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Very nice  !! 7014I like the pic of the crappy welds.  lol weld it like you own it
Reply:All vertical up welds were made with 3/32 7018H4 on 80 amps DCEP.  The ones inside are one pass, the  ends outside were 2 passes.    Inside welds were kind of hard because I was looking at them from the top as I did them.  Not as easy to see, but I got em done.  Total vertical up 56" counting the second pass on each end top and bottom.Job took me longer than I thought, I charged the original price like I almost always do.  I did not run into any problems, just missed on my quote.  Total time almost 3 hours including travel.  Good thing its not far from my shop.I did try to run the 5/32 vertical up at 140 amps.  It didn't work out too well.  The rod was a box my dad had given me "sealed" in plastic.  Utetic or how ever you speel it 7018 AC or DC.  The rod was burning off faster than the flux, so It screwed me up.  I ground it off and used the 3/32 Lincoln 7018 out of the oven to do all the vertical up.thanks for lookingDavid Last edited by David R; 11-20-2008 at 08:16 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Nice job, send that snow east where waiting.
Reply:Cool deal, but I'm confused (no surprise there), what are/were the 4 yellow tubes welded for?  I see them in the 1st two pictures but the last one, doen't show them?Is that part attached to the bobcat?

Reply:Thanks
Reply:Nice job!! The snow is susposed to hit here tonight!!
Reply:That skid steer attachment is so nice.  I have it on my little tractor and it comes in really handy being able to change out the bucket to forks in no time.   Job looks good and for their sake I hope it is a good sized bobcat too...   Matthew
Reply:I'm putting a quick hitch on a set of forks now.  Except I don't have  those fancy brackets to weld. I am having to make my own. This is the third quick hitch I've done in a week and a half.  The other two were new Kubota pin on style buckets that had to be cut and ground flat.  The welding.including fabbing the brackets took two hours on those.  The cutting well... lets just say it took almost twice as much because the brackets had to be completely removed without doing too much damage to the bucket.Last edited by lugweld; 11-20-2008 at 09:14 PM.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
